I greeted this outstanding video from http://www.technology-in-business.net with a mixture of awe and concern.  Awe because of the intellect and technology needed to create these Bionic "men"and the robotic band.  And concern because we may have invented our replacements on planet Earth.  Once these miraculous machines become sentient through Artificial  Intelligence (AI), all bets are off.  Then, who becomes the slave and the master?  This concern runs through the novels of Isaac Asimov ("I Robot") to the pulp fiction movie classics under the "Terminator" logo.  Perhaps I'm being a little over cautious, but I don't fully trust emotionless machines made in our image.  Be careful for what you wish for; you may get it.  Aloha, Russ.

The bond between the aviation industry and ground transportation has been strong since the Wright brothers used their bicycle shop to design their first gliders and the famous Kittyhawk powered aircraft. One industry often fed the other with ideas, modifications, and special materials.  Aluminum car bodies, Heads Up Displays (HUD), and Automatic Braking Systems (ABS) have historical antecedents in the aviation industry.  Well-written article. A new diet known by the acronym MIND (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) could significantly lower a person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) — even if the diet is not meticulously followed, according to a paper published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association.

This finding comes from a longitudinal study by Rush University Medical Center and Harvard School of Public Health of 923 volunteers (144 of them developed AD) shows that the MIND diet lowered the risk of AD by as much as 53 percent in participants who adhered to the diet rigorously, and by about 35 percent in those who followed it moderately well.

The key to the human race’s future may be right beneath our feet. It sounds bizarre, but fungi better known as mushrooms can help solve many of society’s greatest challenges, from cleaning up the environment and living more sustainability to colonizing other planets.

Threaded into nearly every square inch of the ground are tiny, biological wires called mycelia. They’re the raw, exposed nervous system of the mushrooms that hold the planet together. When your feet press against the ground, or when it rains, or when a tree falls over, the fungal network responds, streaming chemical data in all directions and altering its growth and behavior accordingly. Crusading mycologist Paul Stamets calls mycelia the “neurological network of nature,” and a “biomolecular superhighway.” He likens this fungal network to the human nervous system and the structure of the Universe itself.

To some, Stamets’s description of fungi may sound uncomfortably metaphysical. But he’s right that, much like a nervous system, fungal networks have been managing Earth’s ecosystems for eons. And by learning to harness these astounding organisms, we can build ourselves a stronger and more sustainable world.

In an essay titled What Can a Network do?,  Alexander Galloway discussed the need for humans to adopt machine-like capabilities for reading networks. Instead of treating a network as a text—as humanities scholars would want—we should instead read it as a machine would, through a process of parsing. This procedure takes data and sorts it into categories of relevance in order to create a meaningful analysis. The parsing machine par excellence is the algorithm, and it dominates much of our digital lives. In recent years, algorithms have been telling us what music to listen to, who we should date, what stocks we should buy, and even what we should eat. It comes as no surprise, then, that it should also tell us what art we should view. But what happens when the art we are looking at becomes the algorithm itself?
