Spirits, alcoholic ones, have their way of sinking their depressive tendrils deep inside, drawing up everything we keep locked away. My man and I spent the night apart, out and about Brooklyn.

Tech CEO thinks women who wear heels are brainless #getalife | Innovative Woman | Scoop.it
Yesterday evening at a demo day in Midtown, Jorge Cortell, the CEO of a healthcare startup and a self-described "hacker-hacktivist" took a creepshot of a female attendee's high heels and posted it his public Twitter account with the following...
Arabella DeLucco's insight:
Sometimes startup people are so f*cking snarky it makes me embarrassed for them. Haters will hate. Also, I think this is from a demo day in NYC...doesn't this guy know he's in the fashion capital of the world? (My Parisian friends might have a differing opinion, but all I know is that the Europeans in SF certainly comment about the lack of effort put into fashion and style in the tech industry.)

Amanda Palmer's open letter to Sinead O'Conner re: Miley Cyrus

Amanda Palmer's open letter to Sinead O'Conner re: Miley Cyrus | Innovative Woman | Scoop.it

Dear Sinéad,

I love you. I grew up worshipping your music and your bold attitude and, especially, your refusal to sign up to the bullshit beauty standard. You were one of the few women rockstars that was clearly doing things her own way, and you inspired me to no end. I want to thank you for doing that. I listened to your stunning voice and your true, deep lyrics endlessly on my walkman, flipping the tape again, and again, then again, then again…and I know those ingredients still live and breathe inside me every time I write a song of my own. You shaped me...

Arabella DeLucco's insight:

A response from Amanda Palmer to Sinead O'Connor's open letter to Miley Cyrus.

It's been a debated topic on my Facebook page. What's feminism? All I hope for is that women can find the courage to stick to their instincts and their guns. If you want to take your clothes off...that's just fine, but know that there is always optimal times for all decisions and actions.

My point was that Miley Cyrus may not have exercised her ability to make a sound decision when hiring Terry Richardson as the director of this particular video. I think Terry Richardson has some sort of genius -- or we can call it "EQ" -- in that his ability to get beautiful women to take off their clothes on camera is uncanny. I do like his "work" with Kate Upton's Cat Daddy video, which you can watch here -- I have many times over.

This is all about decision making -- and having the confidence to make such decisions in spite of the industry or what others tell you. Sometimes you choose to listen to the industry, and sometimes you should go with your gut and be determined to stick to your choice. Perhaps Miley made the right decision? She is getting a ton of press. My second post about her already!

eric Medina's curator insight, October 13, 2013 7:43 PM

On Miley's behalf, this article sheds more of a positive light on what Miley is doing. Amanda Palmer is somewhat supportive of Miley. I do not agree with Amanda's perspective on the issue because i feel like Miley is just going downhill.

Sinead O’Connor pens open letter to Miley Cyrus: ‘Don’t let the music business make a prostitute of you’ | EW.com | Innovative Woman | Scoop.it
Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor is no stranger to controversy (she famously tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II while saying, “Fight the real...
Arabella DeLucco's insight:

Wow. At first, I was wondering if it was a Sinead O'Connor PR stunt to send Miley Cyrus this letter. But it's not.

First, I watched Miley's video. Now, don't get me wrong -- I LOVE ALL THINGS SEXY! I love it when women feel empowered to be sexy and sensual, but there's something to be said about doing so in an authentic and natural manner.

Remember Madonna's Vogue video? Or her Blonde Ambition tour? Yes, it was provocative, but it was sexy well done! The amazing thing about Madonna is that she always tried to push boundaries, but I can't remember a case when it was out of place.

Miley's video is the opposite. It starts off very strong -- for a few seconds until she starts licking the sledgehammer. Was that necessary? There was a judge that said something in the way of "I know porn when I see it." You can say the same about "authentically sexy" and "trying to hard."

I've always been put-off by people who "tried too hard." Work hard, yes, but don't try too hard. Let your natural abilities shine through. If you're sexy, you don't have to do a lot to be sexy.

So, after I watched Miley's video, I then read Sinead's letter. Now, I think whether or not the letter was a PR stunt, Sinead makes a strong case. Miley is talented, and she doesn't need inauthentic sexy videos. I hope Miley heeds Sinead's advice. And my advice is this: make great music and be sexy without trying too too hard. You really can do it!

75 years in the making: Harvard's epic study on what men need to live a happy life - and liberal men have more sex than conservative ones

75 years in the making: Harvard's epic study on what men need to live a happy life - and liberal men have more sex than conservative ones | Innovative Woman | Scoop.it
In 1938 Harvard University began following 268 male undergraduate students and kicked off the longest-running longitudinal studies of human development in history.
Arabella DeLucco's insight:

My favorite part is this:

With regards to sex lives, one of the most fascinating discoveries is that aging liberals have way more sex.  Political ideology had no bearing on overall life satisfaction, but the most conservative men on average shut down their sex lives around age 68, while the most liberal men had healthy sex lives well into their 80s.  Vaillant writes, “I have consulted urologists about this, they have no idea why it might be so.”

I have an idea on why this might be! Men with liberal values are probably more open minded than conservative ones. They might also be more attracted to free-spirited women who aren't stiff like some conservative women I know.

Here's to hot Filipina mom, Maria Kang. #noexcuses #makeithappen | Innovative Woman | Scoop.it
Arabella DeLucco's insight:

I've been raised by the women in my family and love them very much. It's very important for women -- with or without children -- to understand that it's okay to take time for themselves so that they can live a happier and healthier life. It's not being selfish. It's being self-aware. I don't have Maria Kang's abs...and I've never been pregnant. I just haven't prioritized working out on a regular basis. I should. It really is mind over matter. As I get older (and hopefully wiser), I learn every day that excuses kill hopes, dreams and goals. #makeithappen

Empathy for more impactful, innovative solutions

Empathy for more impactful, innovative solutions | Innovative Woman | Scoop.it

Today, empathy seems to be everywhere. There’s an entire field dedicated to emphathic design and a growing movement in the medical field to teach empathy. It can help us to see problems with greater clarity, and to design solutions with more humility and inclusiveness. It’s the key ingredient that helps us move from working for people to working with them.

Via The Ashoka Community
Arabella DeLucco's insight:

Learning empathy can help with innovation. How? It provides parameters for you to work with -- and parameters give you a set amount of resources or opportunities that will require you to be more resourcesful.

For example, it's easier to build a business and/or a career thinking only about how you can make money. There are plenty of ways to make money, but if you add a layer of values to this goal, then you also raise your standards and make a bigger positive  impact not just in your bank account but in the world.

The Ashoka Community's curator insight, October 3, 2013 1:02 PM

It's a lesson that today's class of MBA-carrying self-defined world-changers would do well to remember, especially those who proclaimt he merits of for-profit social enterprise without understanding the cultural contexts in which they work. Empathy is part of what separates effective problem-solvers from their well-intentioned peers.

Robert Wing's curator insight, November 15, 2013 11:17 AM

Empathy is at the root of patient and family centered care. As healthcare providers it is imperative we consciously make ongoing choices to see healthcare experiences from our patient’s perspective and then to partner with them to tailor the support & interventions we provide to address their specific needs. It allows for this partnership to deepen and creates an environment of trust where truly effective care and support happens.

Bridegroom is a documentary film that tells the emotional journey of Shane Bitney Crone and Tom Bridegroom, two young men in a loving and committed relationship that was cut tragically short...

Arabella DeLucco's insight:

When I lived in LA, I was part of a team of young and talented people that started a Web channel called URGENY. We started it in 2006, and unfortunately was not able to keep it going. But out of this experience, I met such lovely and amazing people -- one of whom was Shane Bitney Crone.

I remember when I was in between moving apartments, and Shane and Tom took me in and let me stay in their house in Burbank. They were one of the most loving couples I had ever met in my life. In fact, it's always so difficult to watch and read about their story because it's just one of those relationships that I have always looked up to...and had hoped that one day, I too would find such amazing love.

It's true that this documentary is not about gay marriage. It's about love. Please remember to watch the premiere on OWN, Sunday, Oct. 27 at 10 PM (9 PM central).

D&AD represents the global creative, design and advertising communities and celebrates brilliance in commercial creativity.
Arabella DeLucco's insight:

Part of being innovative is harnessing and sharpening your creativity. I believe that the best and most rewarding work taps into your creative talent. My favorite television shows have always been ridiculously well-written, directed and produced narratives like Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones and reality show competitions like Top Chef and Project Runway.  I'm drawn to startups and entrepreneurship not because I like money -- but because in order to scale an idea into a profitable business, one must exhibit resourcefulness and creative execution.

Start with deceptively small things (to implement Frighteningly Ambitious Startup Ideas) | Innovative Woman | Scoop.it

"Let me conclude with some tactical advice. If you want to take on a problem as big as the ones I've discussed, don't make a direct frontal attack on it. Don't say, for example, that you're going to replace email. If you do that you raise too many expectations. Your employees and investors will constantly be asking "are we there yet?" and you'll have an army of haters waiting to see you fail. Just say you're building todo-list software. That sounds harmless. People can notice you've replaced email when it's a fait accompli."
