Students Invent Water Purification Disc That Could Revolutionize Clean Water Access - Video 3min

Students Invent Water Purification Disc That Could Revolutionize Clean Water Access - Video 3min | Innovative Products | Scoop.it

Students at the University of Virginia have developed a new way of purifying water that they say could bring improved water quality for millions in the developing world.  It’s called a Madi Drop. Field testing begins this month in South Africa.

What’s created is called a MadiDrop – a ceramic disc infused with silver.

When dropped in water, silver ions, which are atoms that have an electrical charge,, are released to purify the water.  And, testing here at the University of Virginia shows clean, safe water.

“It’s not just about making a really great technology that effectively removes or kills bacteria and pathogens.  It’s about making a low cost, simple to use one, tailored to people in developing countries who don’t have many resources,” said Beeta Ehdaie, a doctoral candidate at UVA.

Another potential scientific breakthrough. These are the issues that technology progress should address.

Fernando Ortiz's curator insight, March 6, 8:33 AM

This is great news. Something like this can be very helpful throughout the world. Especially countries with the lack of healthy water. However, with the technology of this, I am sure big corporations would try to get a hold of it. The big corporations would try to get a big profit off of this and I'm sure not many people would appreciate this.

Arun Shrivastava's curator insight, March 13, 3:13 AM

Availability of safe drinking water is a huge problem in India. Once safe well water is now contaminated; so is river water. This technology is appropriate for India as well.

Visual content has always reigned supreme. However, with shorter attention spans and a deluge of content, it's getting more and more difficult to be seen.

That doesn't mean that you cannot do it. For example, a great way to achieve success is to hit your audience with a bang. Short videos can help tremendously.

This article is great because it presents some well-chosen case studies. My favorite one is trend #1. I watch BBC News' Instafaxes on Instagram every day and love how succinct and yet thorough the team can be in 15 seconds.
