Looking Through the Labrary Lens: Lessons from the Library Test Kitchen | Library by Design

Looking Through the Labrary Lens: Lessons from the Library Test Kitchen | Library by Design | innovative libraries | Scoop.it

Describing the Labrary, LTK instructor Jeff Goldenson said that it’s “a place where libraries can outsource risk and innovation,” a “pop-up R&D department” that explores ideas too disruptive for a traditional library location (for more, see “Making Room for Innovation” by Goldenson and Chattanooga PL’s Nate Hill). By bringing student projects to the public and inviting interaction and response, the Labrary became an exploration of what it means to be a library space. Though it was only open briefly, the Labrary suggested new ways of looking at nontraditional library space design.

Two library service prototyping spaces, in two very different places, have a remarkable amount in common. Nate Hill runs and operates the 4th Floor in Chattanooga, a large public library loft space operating as a flexible community makerspace and event space. Publishing at the Public Library: Become a Community Publishing Portal | GPLS Events

Publishing at the Public Library: Become a Community Publishing Portal | GPLS Events | innovative libraries | Scoop.it

Public libraries have always been in a unique position to help local writers connect with readers in their communities. The advent of self-publishing platforms presents libraries with a new resource to enhance that connection and reinforce their place at the center of community cultural life.

Last year Los Gatos (Calif.) Library began a partnership with e-book self-publishing company Smashwords to offer a three-part series of e-book self-publishing seminars. This partnership has grown to include a co-branded publishing portal managed by Smashwords. Linked from the library website, the portal enables local authors to publish and distribute e-books at no cost and allows them to "Publish to the Library" if the library chooses to purchase their work. Find out how Los Gatos Library developed this partnership and how your library can easily do the same
