Imagination-Stimulating Libraries : children's library

Imagination-Stimulating Libraries : children's library | innovative libraries | Scoop.it

children's library - The school environment is often not the focus for design initiatives beyond the basics, but the Children’s Library of Thomas’s London Day School has been given an update to make it look and feel as creative as possible. Designed by Hugh Broughton Architects, the Children's Library of Thomas's London Day School incorporates a floor that's inspired by the world map, colorfully oversized seating solutions and much more to encourage creativity and interaction.

As affluent parents opt for private education over public, many are looking for the absolute best facilities to place their children in the care of. As such, the Children's Library of Thomas's London Day School is designed to indeed stimulate children's minds, but also satisfy design-conscious parents as well..

Hopefully these design considerations will be accepted by public institutions and not just restricted to "affluent parents" and private schools.

The Future Of Libraries Is Collaborative, Robotic, And Participatory

The Future Of Libraries Is Collaborative, Robotic, And Participatory | innovative libraries | Scoop.it

Libraries can survive these times of technological upheaval, but they're going to have to  change fast. Gloomy is not the predominant tone of a terrific new report from Arup, the well-regarded design consultancy. It shows that libraries are undergoing a "renaissance," and that the future could be good for others.

Arup organized workshops in four cities, bringing together a range of people interested in libraries. The report collects ideas from existing projects, as well as ideas for future spaces. There are four main themes, as summarized in the illustration. Despite a lack of funding and the threat of online alternatives, "trends shaping the future of libraries have the potential to reshape and reinvigorate the role they play in public, academic and corporate settings," the report says.

At this day and age, can libraries survive? To look at the state of many libraries after the recession, facing cuts and closures and fundamental questions about “relevance,” you could be forgiven for being gloomy about their future. But gloomy is not the predominant tone of a terrific new report from Arup, the well-regarded design consultancy. It shows that some libraries, at least, are undergoing a “renaissance,” and that the future could be good for others.

Library Innovation Strategy - Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover

Library Innovation Strategy - Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover | innovative libraries | Scoop.it

When it comes to change, library innovation does not seem to have advanced much over time, at least judged by all the things that have stayed the same. From the Dewey Decimal System to the book checkout process and the musty smell of library aisles, even in the digital age, not much has changed about traditional libraries over the years.

However, imagine a different type of library where you check out humans – just as you check out books – and listen to these humans share their unique, personal stories. Imagine being able to interact with the stories as you listen to them. It is as if you are seeing and experiencing the world through these peoples’ eyes, from their own perspective.

The “Human Library” is a real library innovation strategy created in Denmark in 2000. Library guests can choose which volunteer they check out based on titles the human books assign themselves. Example titles include everything from “Olympic Athlete,” to “Fat Woman,” to “A Questioning Christian, to “Iraq War Veteran,” to “Homeless Man.” Visitors sit down with their books for approximately 30 minutes to listen to these “interactive books” share their personal stories and experiences.

How Can We Support Library Innovation? | MediaShift

How Can We Support Library Innovation? | MediaShift | innovative libraries | Scoop.it

If you had a few million dollars to invest in libraries, how would you invest it? That’s exactly what the News Challenge team at the Knight Foundation has been thinking about.

Last year the Knight Foundation ran a library grant initiative that pulled in hundreds of entries, an energetic discussion, and creative thinking from around the world. In 2016 they’ll do it again, and for starters, they’ve been inviting ideas on how to shape the challenge question participants will address.

There are so many ways to go with this. Since you asked, Knight friends, here’s what I’m thinking.

Given that (1) the foundation’s core mission is to “promote informed and engaged communities” and (2) libraries are built on community knowledge, I offer two related grant-shaping questions:

How might we leverage libraries as platforms for learning?

Text-a-librarian services now available at Rider Libraries | Rider University

Text-a-librarian services now available at Rider Libraries | Rider University | innovative libraries | Scoop.it

Just in time for the final research papers and other end-of-the-semester projects, Moore and Talbott libraries now offer the option of texting a question to a librarian. This new option allows students to contact a librarian from any location by sending a question or request from their phones.

Assistant Professor-Librarian Heather Dalal championed the Text-a-Librarian service.  "When I first started at Rider in 2012, I saw Rider librarians providing great service to students at the reference desk, answering phone calls emails, and scheduling one-on-one appointments," she says. "Since texting has surpassed the use of phone calls and emails, especially for college students, adding Text-a-Librarian seemed a natural next step to show students that Rider librarians want to support them at each and any step in the complicated clunky research process."
