I have spent the past seven years working to lead an organization into a new culture of innovation. Saying it has, at times, been a struggle is tantamount to saying that Everest is a bit steep. Whenever I find challenges, I always look inward as much as at the environment to find any potential challenges to success or meeting my goals. As a result, I have spent much of those seven years learning to hone my management and leadership style into one that creates, or if not ‘creates’ then at least ‘allows for’ or ‘encourages’ an environment where Innovation will flourish. I have come to understand that the primary component in this effort is the cultivating and managing of innovative people.
An aging library system’s dramatic re-invention delivers better service for its community today—and into the future
By the late 1990s, the Tower Hamlets borough in London’s East End had the worst-ranked library service in the city. When asked, the community acknowledged the importance of its libraries, but usage rates just didn’t add up. Buildings were inconveniently located, required a lot of upkeep, and weren’t physically accessible. A system that had been designed 100 years ago was struggling to meet the needs of its current community.

Speakers: Dame Lynne Brindley, Chief Executive of the British Library The British Library is continuously seeking new ways in which to share its collection with a wider audience, in the UK and across the world. In recent years, the growth of technology and the web have enabled huge strides to be made in this regard. The Library is working with public and private partners to further its digital programme, including delivering huge scale digitalisation projects with newspapers and 19th century literature. It is also collaborating with others to build the digital libraries of the future, including the European Library. Lynne Brindley assesses how the British Library is utilising the opportunities offered by new technologies, including digitisation and web 2.0 functions, to enable wider access to its collection and to enhance the Library’s services and exhibitions. She also considers the issues that the Library faces as it builds the digital library of the future.
Imagining social media and the library of the future: Libraries of the future: Many imagine the future of libraries to be dim going so far as to predict the end of the library. This thinking is the result of a lack of understanding or a narrow view of what libraries are and a failure to see how they will evolve and what role apps, Social Media, Big Data, and Web 2.0 tools will play.
The library (physical space), information instruction, and the virtual library all have a large and exciting role to play in the coming years.

As times continue to change, libraries across New Jersey have had to adapt to the rise of millennials and their reliance on constantly-evolving technology. In an effort to keep millennials engaged in this digital era, many libraries have started to undertake a variety of new initiatives aimed at attracting young users.
To not only survive, but also flourish, libraries will adapt and find new roles. Realizing that resources are both finite and constrained, they will accept the necessity of ceasing activities that are not valued and embracing value-added activities that demonstrate return on investment in the library.

Libraries are constantly looking for new ways to engage and connect their services to the needs of the public. Customer service is fundamentally about giving the patron what they want, in the form they want, where and when they want it.
