"A personal learning environment is a concept, not a thing or an event, but encompasses formal and informal learning experiences and interactions with various resources and people through a network of Web 2.0 platforms. It becomes a system that each individual [learner] manages, creates and builds, a learner centered, self-directed environment. Personal Learning Environments (PLE) are systems that learners create and control to manage and direct their own learning. In this environment learners do the following: Delete the scoop?

"Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) do exactly what they say on the can - they are personal to each individual, created by them, owned by them, used by them within their lifelong learning." Steve Wheeler says PLEs are within both informal and formal contexts. They are wider than the web tool usage and the PLN. He argues that students need structure and a scaffolded approach in the digital world. Delete the scoop?

"So recently, I was asked to make a diagram of my Personal Learning Environment. To do this, I had to start thinking about how I learn. I began brainstorming my personal learning resources, which included online tools, media, the people i associate with, mobile apps, grad school, and much more. I wanted to organize all of these aspects of my learning environment in an easy-to-read diagram, but as I brainstormed source after source, it became a little overwhelming." Dan Le Delete the scoop?

"A Personal Learning Environment is developed from tools or artefacts. Vygotsky (1978) considered that all artefacts are culturally, historically and institutionally situated. “In a sense, then, there is no way not to be socioculturally situated when carrying out an action. Conversely there is no tool that is adequate to all tasks, and there is no universally appropriate form of cultural mediation. Even language, the ‘tool of tools’ is no exception to this rule” (Cole and Wertsch, 2006). Social networking tools are culturally situated artefacts. Jyri Engestrom (2005) says “the term ‘social networking’ makes little sense if we leave out the objects that mediate the ties between people. Think about the object as the reason why people affiliate with each specific other and not just anyone. For instance, if the object is a job, it will connect me to one set of people whereas a date will link me to a radically different group. This is common sense but unfortunately it’s not included in the image of the network diagram that most people imagine when they hear the term ‘social network.’ The fallacy is to think that social networks are just made up of people. They’re not; social networks consist of people who are connected by a shared object.” Delete the scoop?

"A Personal Learning Environment (PLE) is a differentiated and individualized approach to learning that is unique from person to person. Digital technology and online social networks make it easier than ever before for people to create their own PLE tailored to their individual learning styles and interests. In the face of this reality educators and school systems have a choice: personalize, or become irrelevant." Art Titzel Delete the scoop?

"Where the LMS is vertically integrated and institutionally centralized, the PLE is the educational manifestation of the web’s "small pieces loosely joined," a "world of pure connection, free of the arbitrary constraints of matter, distance, and time."5 Proponents assert that the PLE’s greater flexibility, portability, adaptability, and openness make it far superior to the LMS as a teaching and learning platform. The PLE is not without its weaknesses, however. Potential security and reliability concerns abound. This conundrum leaves higher education with what appears to be an unsatisfying either-or choice that requires significant tradeoffs whichever path we choose."Johnathan Mott Delete the scoop?
