These competencies are reflective of Gardner's 5 Minds for the Future and borrowing from Kathleen McClaskey's insights:

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Ben shared the curriculum that is experiential, learner-focused and based on these 7 MS competencies:

>> Creator: being an innovator, designer and maker of new things

>> Communicator: with compassion through oral, written, visual, musical, non-verbal and dance.

>> Collaborator: team member, leading and negotiating, sharing

>> Explorer: showing curiosity, taking risks and experimenting

>> Thinker: creative, critical, analytical, broad minded

In a world where knowledge is readily available on every Internet-connected device, what you know matters far less than what you can do with what you know.

Further along in the article: Organizations often chase creativity, but what they really need to pursue is innovation. Theodore Levitt puts it best: ‘What is often lacking is not creativity in the idea-creating sense but innovation in the action-producing sense, i.e. putting ideas to work.’” -

Vicki Butler's insight:

This thought provoking and practical article gives terrific guidelines for fostering innovation. Scroll the bottom of the article and take a look at the 25 ways to create your classroom of innovation.

I've been watching the evolution of a friends project: empathetic innovation. It's been fascinating and rewarding to see it come together. Some similar basic design pieces are in this article. I'm also reminded of the 20/20 challenge precipitated by the book High Noon. From the NAIS website: Below are the 20 global problems outlined in High Noon: 20 Global Problems, 20 Years to Solve Them by Jean Francois Rischard. Schools participating in NAIS's Challenge 20/20 program may choose from among these problems. The Challenge 20/20 teams -- who are school groups in the U.S. partnered with school groups in other countries -- work to find local solutions to the global problem. http://www.nais.org/Articles/Pages/Challenge-20-20-Twenty-Global-Problems.aspx

leading and learning: Transforming education: Stop teaching and begin learning with your students

leading and learning: Transforming education: Stop teaching and begin learning with your students | Innovation Leadership Play | Scoop.it

It seems counter-intuitive but students are failing because teachers are teaching too well.Teachers spend hours and hours of their time preparing lessons for their students but all too often the only person learning anything are the teachers themselves. Even the most attentive and compliant of students do not get what the teachers intend – and worse still researchers have shown that that such teaching does not change students’ minds – and changing minds is the definition of learning.

I love this from the post:

The exhibit is organized around four big ideas that emanate from the work of Frances and David Hawkins:

Eolithism – Begin with a child’s existing curiosity and content that engages her sense of wonderI, Thou, It – Find a shared personal interest in this content and explore it with the childMessing About – Approach this learning experience without an agenda using play, inquiry and discussion to guide the workTeacher as Learner – Engage in investigations of materials to deepen understandings to provide support for the child’s understandings

I think we all need to do a bit of messing about!

Thanks Vicki! I hope you will be able to visit the exhibit. We are going to have a conference with Ellen Hall on Oct 25 and 26/13 to officially open for viewing. More information to follow.

Necessary Shifts: A Change in K-12 Teacher Education | Innovation Leadership Play | Scoop.it

Teacher Education Innovation

It stands to reason that if students are changing, teachers need to change too. More specifically, the education that teachers receive needs to be modified to meet the modern needs of K - 12 classrooms. There are policy and practice changes taking place all over the world - many driven by teachers - that address the cultural shifts in the classroom

Vicki Butler's insight:

I love the idea of teachers really engaging in learning and administrators teaching a class! The discussion about colleges looking at the true needs of educators is one that would be very beneficial.

Encouraging Play with a Digital Sandbox : Teacher Reboot Camp | Innovation Leadership Play | Scoop.it

Play is one of the most effective ways we learn. Let’s imagine children playing in a sandbox. What happens? They are surrounded by various tools. A child will choose a tool to experiment with like a pail. The child might use that pail to hold sand, turn the pail upside down to shape mounds for a castle, or wear the pail as a helmet. We can take the idea of a sandbox to encourage play, experimentation, and creativity with some of our favorite web tools by creating a “digital sandbox'

Interactive Sesame Street, Nat Geo TV come to Microsoft Kinect...

The skinny: For decades, educational video games have failed to get a rise out of kids and parents; that 1985’s The Oregon Trail is still the genre’s most well-known is telling. You could say that Microsoft aims to shake that perception with its two newest apps for the Xbox 360, Kinect Sesame Street TV and Kinect Nat Geo TV, but Microsoft has said proudly that these are not games. Instead, the shows combine pre-recorded videos with Kinect’s motion and voice sensors, and the results are two entirely different tacks on adding interactivity to standard TV series.
