Tufts University Named Best Open-source School in America, Tools for Innovation

In May 15, 2014, researchers backed by Spanish software download site Portal Programas published a report naming Tufts University the number one open-source university in the United States. 

Tufts received an overall score of 100, followed by Utah State (93.01) and the University of Notre Dame (57.10).  Two other Massachusetts universities scored in the top 15:  University of Massachusetts Boston (4th) and MIT (14th), ranking Massachusetts only behind Utah in states where colleges and universities actively participate in open source projects and the operational use of open-source software.

Millions of consumers will be able to use a smartphone app to pay for purchases this year in the latest shift away from cash and card payments.

 

Known as Zapp, the app is due to launch in the autumn and will be available to 18 million UK current account holders with HSBC, First Direct, Nationwide, Santander and Metro Bank.

 

The mobile payment system will only work for online purchases initially, but Peter Keenan, chief executive of Zapp, said he expects it to be enabled for at least one in five store payments from late 2015, meaning that consumers can "leave their wallets at home".

There are two primary means of paying with your phone at a brick-and-mortar store: scan to pay using a QR code, and tap to pay using Near-Field Communication, or NFC. As the market battle rages over which pay-by-phone technology will win out, LevelUp has decided to hedge its bets with a new piece of hardware that supports both.

Amantha Imber wondered why the research she had read was not being applied to help firms innovate.


What was the use of having a body of scientific research, including proven drivers to innovation, if it was not being used to help companies grow?


“There was a gap between academic research and what happens ‘in the real world’,” she says.

Six years later the consultancy she founded, Inventium, is advising some of the world’s best-known corporations, including Coca-Cola Amatil, American Express, Qantas and Commonwealth Bank of Australia.


Inventium won this year’s BRW Client Choice Award for best management consulting firm. The awards are run by Beaton and are based on responses from more than 40,000 professional services clients to ensure their independence.


...“People talk about trying to build a culture of innovation. From analysis we know what sorts of elements need to be present,” Imber says.

“One of the most important is that staff need to feel a sense of challenge. They also need to have the resources to deliver.

People need to feel that risk-taking is allowed and failure is not terrible, but rather an opportunity to learn.”


She says there are keys to transforming ideas into realities.


“Crush assumptions,” she says. “Whenever we set out to solve a problem, we have assumptions that fence in our thinking.


By deliberately crushing assumptions and asking ‘What if the opposite was true?’ you can significantly increase your  creativity.”

1. Big data goes mainstream.


Paul Daugherty, CTO at Accenture, predicts that 2013 will be the year that many companies plunge into big data in a big way, which doesn't ensure success, notes M. Eric Johnson, director of the Center for Digital Technology at Dartmouth University.
   

"…we will continue to see a good deal of disappointment, …a lot of companies are clueless about how to unlock the value …in their data."

  
2. The digital enterprise emerges.
A confluence of technologies and systems is ushering in an era of digital acceleration. Clouds, mobile technology and social media increasingly make proprietary hardware and software platforms irrelevant.
   

Bill Briggs, global lead of Deloitte Digital and deputy chief technology officer for Deloitte Consulting. "There is an immense interrelationship among various digital technologies. They are profoundly reshaping business and creating enormous opportunities."
    

3. Social media gets sophisticated.

        
"…the combination of mobility, social and location-based services has the ability to transform the enterprise."

     

4. Clouds are everywhere.

   
"The cloud means that you can …create a sum greater than the individual parts, …[which] also translates into greater agility and flexibility."

    

5. IT stocks talent.

   
Organizations are loading up on IT talent and building centers of technology excellence to spur innovation.

   

…Last September, General Motors said that it plans to hire as many as 1,500 workers to staff a new computer technology center near Detroit. Other major companies have made similar announcements in recent months.

   
6. IT means business.

   
"We're at the point where you cannot separate business strategy from technology strategy," explains Deloitte's Briggs.  

"Siloed organizations cannot act in the highly agile manner that's necessary," Georgetown's Prashant warns. He says that organizations must create cross-functional teams and engage in practices that help IT and business executives become more fluent in each other's domains.

    

7. The post-PC era takes hold.  

   
"It's vital to deliver the full fidelity of services and offerings across mobile platforms," says David Reilly, managing director of Bank of America's Technology Infrastructure organization. 2013 will be a year in which IT executives must focus on creating a consistent experience across devices and browsers.

    

8. Consumerization rules.
Confront the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) movement and the consumerization of IT to support smartphones, tablets and other employee devices.

    

9. Organizations get serious about cyber-security.
Cyber-threats are increasing…Ernst & Young's Nichols says that organizations must examine security in a more holistic manner, including examining the cloud, partners and mobile systems.

The good news is that tools are becoming more sophisticated, and the coming year may be as a turning point.


10. Analytics is for everyone.

   

"We are quickly reaching a point of maturity…" …Analytics software is allowing more agile and effective decision making in business. This trend will continue to accelerate in 2013.

Change colleague Liz Guthridge has a winner of a post on accessing quality thinking by simply not thinking for a spell.  Techniques of mindful meditation, rest (or siesta, as I'd prefer from my Argentine side), as well as just stepping away for a break can contribute to a fresh view and insights from the deep well of our unconscious. ~ DN

That’s because we automatically tap into our unconsciousness to do most of our thinking. It doesn’t require effort on our part, as David Rock explains. Even better, our unconsciousness—which can seem as vast as the Milky Way—makes powerful connections for us.

  

...Offices are not brain-friendly settings.

  

Her steps to access include:

  

1. Quiet your brain. Start by putting aside all of the electronic gadgets that stimulate you and your brain. You also may want to close your eyes.

  

2. Let your mind wander. (DN:  Mindfulness practices teaches us to observe thoughts, but to NOT engage them.)

  

3. Put yourself in a positive state. 

 

4. Do something else other than work on the issue, problem or dilemma you’re facing.

The deal is the latest move by Google to extend its mobile business with an eye toward making smartphones and tablets the [the means] to connect with other devices throughout their day.

   

“Google's acquisition of Nest makes the mobile phone a consumer's remote control for everyday life,” said Andrea Wilson, Fort Worth, TX-based vice president, strategy director and luxury practice lead at iProspect.


.....Android is already the most widely used mobile operating system in the world. A recent report from Gartner found that Android accounted for nearly 82 percent of all smartphone sales during the third quarter of 2013.

Ken Burbary writes up a helpful piece on where Google is headed.

Having recently switched to a Droid Samsung S4 for its amazing voice recognition and texting enhancements, while remaining a die-hard Apple fan, suggests that Ken is onto the key intention of Google to be a part of our everyday lives.  Google Glass anyone?
Examples:
  • I love the Gee Whiz of my factor of my phone, to run Roku or Aero off my TV, especially when the Roku remote WAS NOT working.
   
  • Taking photos of checks for deposit is pretty cool.  Yes, any phone can do this, but hey, the key fact is we ARE doing it - adult kids and parents in the house.
    
  • Boomers are helping each other learn their phones, perhaps on those bus rides to Stratford (Shakespeare plays.)
   
  • Sorry Siri, but Google voice on a Droid can set my alarm clock just as easily, and has amazing voice recognition accuracy.

Instead of convincing universities to take a chance on its classroom engagement platform, Top Hat Monocle made direct contact with professors who asked students to also pick up the tab.


...most students carried mobile devices...which could be used for in-class interaction. [The founders] ...developed a prototype product that focused on quizzing and polling students, and pilot-tested the prototype in two classes.

“Selling to large organizations like universities, governments and big corporations is difficult and time-consuming. Large organizations have a very long sales cycle and if you catch them outside of a budget cycle, you may not get another chance for a year or two.”



THE SOLUTION

The founders decided to “consumerize the classroom” by focusing on individual professors, rather than universities. This made sense because the value proposition was focused on the classroom and because professors have much latitude in making adoption decisions.

THE RESULT


This academic year, it is being used by 2,000 professors and more than 150,000 students at 300 universities worldwide. More than 80 per cent of these universities are in the United States.


The company has 75 employees, offices in three countries, and has been able to raise another $9.1-million in financing.

Bill Gates has been in the media of late with “My Plan to Fix the World’s Biggest Problems.”


Gates’ solution is about continuous improvement.  However ...as Gates’ says, this is simple in concept, but often difficult to execute.  

  


Excerpts:
  
While times have changed for most business functions, it seems that the HR and recruiting departments are stuck in a time warp, circa 1975.

  

1) Stop using skills and experience-based job descriptions.... Instead require the hiring manager to define the job in terms of 6-8 measurable performance objectives.


2) Measure the hiring manager’s ability to attract, develop and retain top people.


3) Never interview more than four people for any job.


4) Define Quality of Hire before the person’s hired based on a performance-based job description.

The author of this article uses HR and recruiting as an example of old practices that need updating as good hires (and good talent development and succession planning) are the front door to smart, high performance cultures.

Balanced scorecards began to be used for the very reason of taking HR's people hire impact into a balanced account of measurement, beyond finance to internal business, learning and growth.


Using performance based job descriptions and innovation (refurbishing boring jobs) can be transforming to organizations still working from a 70's model of HR.

Be aware, overdoing metrics also has drawbacks, such auto companies over-relying on measurement, via ill-conceived management purges (that also appeared age-driven.)  Staffers served in roles as mentors that also produced lower numbers in their metrics because they were taking time to help newly hired and learning youngers.  The lack of a systemic focus lowered productivity and morale at the same time.

One of my favorite books is Diffusion of Innovations by Everett M. Rogers. Although this largely academic book was originally written in 1962, it hasn’t lost any of its usefulness. It explains why innovations and technologies are adopted, or not, and at what rate.


1)“Relative advantage is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as better than the idea it supersedes."


The degree of relative advantage may be measured in economic terms, but social prestige factors, convenience, and satisfaction are also important factors.”


2)“Compatibility is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as being consistent with the existing values, past experiences, and needs of potential adopters.


3)“Complexity is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as difficult to understand and use.”
