How Metacognition Makes Students Better Learners

How Metacognition Makes Students Better Learners | Innovation Disruption in Education | Scoop.it
When students learn to reflect meaningfully about their learning, they can participate in a dialogue with the teacher that allows them to work together to determine the actual level of mastery. No longer working in isolation, the teacher can now adequately discuss depth of learning, thereby helping students to communicate particular knowledge that is too often absent from their final products. After students provide the teacher with thorough information about their process, the teacher is in a better position to assess student learning.

Social Learning Vs Informal Learning: Can You Tell The Difference? | Innovation Disruption in Education | Scoop.it

Learning can happen anytime, anywhere, with those around us serving as invaluable sources of inspiration, experience, and knowledge. In many respects, the world is our teacher, but we must be aware of how to tap into the educational opportunities it can offer. Both social and informal learning models are rooted in this ideology.

Preparing Leaders for Deeper Learning

Preparing Leaders For Deeper Learning
Authored by Karen Cator, Bonnie Lathram, Carri Schneider and Tom Vander Ark
Download the Full Paper
In partnership with: Digital Promise

In the paper, Preparing Leaders for Deeper Learning, released jointly by Getting Smart and Digital Promise, we assert the need for programs that prepare and develop school and district leaders who will create and sustain deeper learning environments. (The paper is the fourth in a series from Getting Smart that explores the shift to deeper learning).

The paper addresses two fundamental questions:

As a growing body of schools and districts recognize the need for deeper, blended, competency-based learning environments for students, how must the role of leaders evolve to create and sustain them?
How must leader preparation and ongoing professional development evolve to fully enable teacher and leader success in this new environment?
The paper captured a diverse set of voices – ranging from current practicing principals to representatives from pioneering programs and organizations whose missions address educational leadership challenges. The team reviewed the literature on leadership development and spent a year tracking the progress of high-performing educational leadership programs, talking to practitioners and researchers at conferences and events to learn from others passionate about this work; this yielded dozens of conversations and 50 guest blog contributions to inform the research, resulting in a paper that is a compilation of many voices, perspectives and ideas.

Why Business Leaders Need To Take On The Education Revolution

Why Business Leaders Need To Take On The Education Revolution | Innovation Disruption in Education | Scoop.it

Have you hired someone straight out of college in the last decade? If you have, it comes as no shock that today's education system simply isn’t creating..

Justin Mateo's curator insight, February 25, 8:10 AM

What really captured my attention about this article, Why Business Leaders Need To Take On The Education Revolution by Justin Gray was that I have always been skeptical as to who teaches me and if they are here teaching me with no teaching credentials or expert experience. My thoughts would start to occur around the first months of the class and by then I could already tell if the teacher was reliable or not because of the way they taught. You could easily tell by the way they taught that they had little experience; skilled in the subject, but not "master" skilled. This article talks about how unskilled employees are making the school systems weaker due to the inexperience of the employees. Justin Gray states that, as a business leader, they are the leaders of the education revolution and how they will progress education. The audience intended for this article is for the board of education because they are the ones responsible for allowing these inexperienced teachers to be allowed in these schools. I understand what Justin wants because I too feel as if the education is becoming weaker and is channeling in the wrong direction. Universities were not intended to provide vocational training. The solution to the education problem is companies need to hire on the potential of a new graduate or anyone with potential for that matter and develop them into something great so that the students can work with and learn well with. This issue must be resolved around the world, specifically the United States.
