Burning Man is an annual art event and temporary community based on radical self expression and self-reliance in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada.
katz kiely's insight:
25 years ago, some people had an idea.
Lets find one of the most barren, inhospitable locations in the world. Let’s build a giant man out of wood. Provide minimal infrastructure. No water. No food. No shops. No cafes. No bars. Just a vast, dusty blank canvas.
Groups of artists will spend thousands of hours planning, fabricating, shipping, transporting and building. Just for the privilege of showing their work alongside the man.
We’ll invite people to join us, and to pay for the honor.
Thousands of people will come to see the work. They will spend a week battling with the elements: the wind, the relentless micro-grains that sneak into every nook and cranny, every orifice, dust so alkaline that unwashed skin starts to crack and bleed.
Then to celebrate, at the end of the week we’ll burn the lot. The Man. The Art. Everything.
It was a crazy idea. What kind of idiots would do that. It would never work, right?
Wrong. So very wrong
I arrived two days ago carrying a heap of emotions: apprehension, skepticism, varying degrees of nervous excitement. A number of burners tried to explain what to expect, but there is no way one can prepare oneself for the experience that is burning man.
It is not the quality of the art. It is not the costumes, not the welcoming warmth, not the way people smile, wave, shout greetings through desert storms.
Burning Man is a celebration of everything that makes us human. A overwhelming manifestation of an intense desire to collaborate, to create, to be part of a community of like minded souls. Not a cult. Just a collection of people exploring how the world could be a nicer place to live.
It has been no easy journey to get here. The uncompromising, relentless passion of the founders is genuinely awe inspiring. I am honored and humbled that they have invited me to join them at this years celebration of life.
The gates to the festival proper open this evening. I am told things will change a lot over the coming week. I can’t wait to see this temporary city evolve and am proud to be, for one week only, a Black Rock citizen.
