Do We Hide Behind Innovation to Avoid Regulation?

Do We Hide Behind Innovation to Avoid Regulation? | Innovation and Change | Scoop.it

One day we will be those selfsame barbarous ancestors as driverless cars, delivery drones, wearables, Facebook, Google and the rest become mere artifacts joining Gutenberg’s press, Henry Ford’s car, and Wilbur and Orville Wright’s airplane, as curios in museum exhibitions and footnotes in whatever has taken the place of history books of any sort.

Is copying the best approach to innovation?

MY general thesis on innovation is that you can start many good things by improving the basic model so that you can come out with something new out of the old. There’s no such thing as instant success. You have to go, test, and improvise on something out of something.

The Why in innovation (part 1 of 2) | Blog post

The Why in innovation (part 1 of 2) | Blog post | Innovation and Change | Scoop.it
Innovation is today’s buzz word. The storyline is that innovation is necessary in this day and age. Companies have to innovate to withstand the ever increasing global competition. New business models emerge all the time, and before you know it, you’re outdated and out of business. That’s the scary part of this story. But you also have to innovate to make your business more profitable, increase your market share or to keep in tune with the current way your customers want to do business.

Can you teach people to innovate?

Can you teach people to innovate? | Innovation and Change | Scoop.it
One of my recent pet peeves is the proliferation of education options for innovation. One of my alma maters offers a "certificate" for innovation management. While I cannot comment on the course, it is taught by two professors with little private sector experience who haven't created a product. One of them is a psychology major, which I guess makes sense because innovation is often the product of new or unusual insights or perspectives.

Innovation without change

I've been puzzling this over the last few weeks, trying to wrap my head around the importance of innovation generally and the lack of real innovation delivery specifically. What I mean is that everyone knows that innovation is vital to growth and future success, but very few new innovations are created. The vast majority of innovation effort and outcome is expended on me-too, so what incremental innovations that don't really change the user or the market.

Six Levers For Solving The Corporate Innovation Problem – Part 3 | Innovation Management

Six Levers For Solving The Corporate Innovation Problem – Part 3 | Innovation Management | Innovation and Change | Scoop.it

This is the third part of a three-part article series. We are investigating why – despite all the investments made into the early phase of innovation – innovation results remain disappointing. We call this the “corporate innovation problem”. In the first part we illustrated that companies are investing heavily into the early phase of innovation. In the second part, we provided some metrics on the corporate innovation problem and found that the corporate innovation problem actually consists of a “complexity” problem” and a “system problem”. In this article, we show six levers to change the “system problem” and think this is the way to solve the corporate innovation problem – and ultimately to increase innovation performance.

How To Think Differently About Leading Change - Brand Quarterly | Innovation and Change | Scoop.it

“Everyone gets excited about change, except when it happens to them.”

These battle-hardened words were shared with one of us (Robert) years ago by the CMO of GE.

The data certainly backs up her frustration. Depending on the study, 30% of change initiatives fail outright. An additional 40% fail to meet performance goals. Only 20% of organizations rank as having strong change leadership capabilities.

When Innovation Needs Vertical Integration

When Innovation Needs Vertical Integration | Innovation and Change | Scoop.it

The most successful firms of the last few decades, like Apple, Tesla, and fast-fashion retailers, achieved such success with extreme vertical integration strategies. These strategies were driven by two assumptions which don’t fit the classical rationale for vertical integration. First, hand-off firms simply weren’t up to the task of achieving the “going beyond” innovation that was needed and created onerous coordination problems. Second, owning innovation and its subsequent refinement and enhancement helps to foster future innovation that’s faster, achieves greater impact, and provides protection against competitive followers.
