Altmetrics and open access: a measure of public interest

Altmetrics and open access: a measure of public interest | Innovation and the knowledge economy | Scoop.it

Researchers, research managers and publishers are increasingly required to factor into their policies and practices the conditions by which publicly funded research must be made publicly available.

Altmetrics (alternative metrics, or article level metrics) measure the number of times a research output gets cited, tweeted about, liked, shared, bookmarked, viewed, downloaded, mentioned, favourited, reviewed, or discussed. It harvests these numbers from a wide variety of open source web services that count such instances, including open access journal platforms, scholarly citation databases, web-based research sharing services, and social media.

Reinventing Discovery | Michael Nielsen

Reinventing Discovery | Michael Nielsen | Innovation and the knowledge economy | Scoop.it

"

I’m very excited to say that my new book, “Reinventing Discovery: The New Era of Networked Science”, has just been released!

The book is about networked science: the use of online tools to transform the way science is done. In the book I make the case that networked science has the potential to dramatically speed up the rate of scientific discovery, not just in one field, but across all of science. Furthermore, it won’t just speed up discovery, but will actually amplify our collective intelligence, expanding the range of scientific problems which can be attacked at all."

I can't recommend this book highly enough -- six stars on a scale of five. The most detailed, well scaffolded with examples and supporting research, and well-written how-to do collective intelligence in the field of science. It's about open science as much as collective intelligence, but understanding each field illuminates understanding of the other.

Barbara Truman's curator insight, July 20, 2013 8:49 AM

Timely! My copy had just found its way to the top of my book pile to mention in my dissertation on transdisciplinarity. Imagine the FoldIT game where the whole family can play and be entertained while engaging in valuable citizen science and collective intelligence. Calling all leaders who can wield such superpowers.

America's Talent Gap Could Cost $1.7 Trillion A Year By 2030

America's Talent Gap Could Cost $1.7 Trillion A Year By 2030 | Innovation and the knowledge economy | Scoop.it
McKinsey & Company released a report that outlined five game-changing industries that could have a significant impact on American GDP by 2020.

So how does America fix education? McKinsey has four major suggestions:

1. Create non-degree training programs to give workers the specific skills needed by employers.

2. Improve learning and labor market outcomes for some graduates of two- and four-year colleges.

3. Expand the number of graduates in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

4. Incorporate a greater focus on skills in targeted areas of immigration policy.

By 2030 over 50% of Colleges will Collapse

By 2030 over 50% of Colleges will Collapse | Innovation and the knowledge economy | Scoop.it

Over the coming decades, the amount of education we consume to stay competitive will increase exponentially.

However, the education we “buy” will increasingly be on “our terms” not on theirs. We will want education that is relative, timely, available on-demand, and fits within a specific need. And it will need to be far more affordable.

For these reasons and more, which the posts explain we will begin to see the mass failure of traditional colleges. But out of this will come an entire new education era unlike anything we have ever seen.
