Is China's lakeside city the future of urban planning?

Is China's lakeside city the future of urban planning? | innovation and diversity | Scoop.it

China's next new city will be designed by US firm KPF, next to Hunan's regional capital, around a 40-hectare lake.

Adjacent to Changsha, the ancient capital city of Hunan, the design implements the sort of urban innovation that creates a sustainable and truly habitable environment.

"We can introduce integrated urban innovation," von Klemperer says, "we can combine water transport with localised energy production, cluster neighbourhood centres, advanced flood prevention and water management, and urban agriculture. Meixi is an experiment in future city planning and building. It will serve Changsha as a new CBD, but it will also serve as a paradigm for other Chinese city planners. It's a kind of live test case."

The firm seeks to achieve these goals through its dense, mixed-use urban, plan, with integration with surrounding mountains, lakes, parks and canals. Meixi Lake will eventually be home to 180,000 inhabitants, living in "villages" of 10,000 people, clustered around the canals...

The UK’s Most ‘Outstanding’ Green Building

The UK’s Most ‘Outstanding’ Green Building | innovation and diversity | Scoop.it

BREEAM is the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings, with 200,000 buildings certified and around a million registered for assessment since it was first launched in 1990.

The largest commercial office in Manchester has now become the highest scoring BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ building in the UK with a score of 95.32%.

Designed by 3DReid, The Co-operative Group’s new £115 million low-energy, highly sustainable headquarters brings their 3,500 staff under one roof in a spectacular 500,000 square foot building.

The building, known as 1 Angel Square, has been designed to deliver a 50 per cent reduction in energy consumption compared to The Co-operative’s current Manchester complex and an 80 per cent reduction in carbon. This will lead to operating costs being lowered by up to 30 per cent...

The satellites have also demonstrated again and again the Earth’s aesthetic beauty, revealed in the patterns, shapes, colors, and textures seen from space. That beauty is what gets celebrated in NASA Earth As Art, a new visual publication made available as a Free 160-Page eBook (PDF) and aFree iPad App.

2013 and the Rise of #Ecommerce 3.0

2013 and the Rise of #Ecommerce 3.0 | innovation and diversity | Scoop.it

From the ever-increasing adoption rate of smart phones to the rise of China and India as top-ranked global internet users, 2013 holds promise for fascinating trends to emerge across industry sectors and across the globe, giving rise to what can only be seen as Ecommerce 3.0.

Ecommerce 1.0-2.0

Ecommerce 1.0 was all about discovering the web and setting up the first online shops. They were imitations of the offline world, with virtual shelves providing breadth and depth of product. Version 2.0 saw these websites transformed into clover multimedia portals that tried to engage users. They were not just about “pull,” where shoppers searched for a specific product and bought it, they were also “push” – convincing customers to snap up that special deal, to follow an impulse.

Ecommerce 3.0 will be defined by a seamless customer experience across all devices and touchpoints as well as unprecedented rate of change as new business models and capabilities arise...

Is it time to move past the idea that our brain is like a computer?

Is it time to move past the idea that our brain is like a computer? | innovation and diversity | Scoop.it

Ever since the days of Alan Turing, neuroscientists have, in increasing numbers, compared the human brain to a computer. It's an analogy that makes a hell of a lot of sense, and it's done much to help us understand this remarkable grey blob that sits between our ears. But as a recent essay by philosopher Daniel Dennett points out, while the brain should most certainly be considered a kind of machine — one with a trillion moving parts — its inner workings are far removed from anything we have ever developed. Consequently, scientists need to take note and update their models accordingly. Calling the brain a "computer," says Dennett, is accurate, but insufficient.

Will humans continue to evolve during multigenerational space missions?

Will humans continue to evolve during multigenerational space missions? | innovation and diversity | Scoop.it

Scientific American has posted an interview and podcast with Portland State University anthropologist Cameron Smith about the ways in which humans might evolve during extended missions in space. Given the intense timeframes involved, Smith speculates about the various ways in which Darwinian pressures will continue to shape human evolution. Just because we're in space, he argues, doesn't mean evolution has stopped. But while Smith is right about our need to adapt to space, his vision of how it will come about is utterly wrong — and here's why.
