Khan Academy Receives $5 Million to Accelerate the Reinvention of Education | innovation in learning | Scoop.it

Whilst there may be some justifiable concerns about the place of Khan Academy in the learning ecosysem, it has a vital role to play. It is accessed by hundreds of thousands, if not milllions.. Additional funding means it can expand its reach to include arts and humanities in addition to its core STEM resources. Smarthistory is a good example of how this can work: http://smarthistory.khanacademy.org/

"Much as Wikipedia draws its content from a large number of volunteer professionals, the curated content system for Khan Academy will look to provide a similar outlet for dedicated professionals to develop quality instructional content."

Three Strategies to Power Your Self-Directed Learning

Three Strategies to Power Your Self-Directed Learning | innovation in learning | Scoop.it
The idea of school and college teaching you the skills you need to succeed is so laughable today that it is considered a joke among employers. This holds true even in an entry level job. People expect high-performers to constantly learn and improve outside of their formal education. Economic, information, and technological forces have come together to form an economy where agility commands more value than entrenchment.

21st century challenges – Learning {Re}imagined | innovation in learning | Scoop.it
It turns out that decontextualised knowledge, stuffed into children’s heads, regurgitated on demand and then forgotten just isn’t that useful in the grand scheme of things. Sure, back in the days of empire it was handy to have identically dressed clerks all over the world who could perform mental arithmetic and communicate in clear written English. The British East India company that ran the Indian sub-continent under corporate rule couldn’t have happened without it. One might say the same today with global corporations like Google, etc or the now stalled globalisation project.

How to Engage the Students Who Need It Most: Gamification

How to Engage the Students Who Need It Most: Gamification | innovation in learning | Scoop.it
That’s the truth about gamification: it will not make your kids smarter or perform better on tests. Gamification is about increasing motivation and engagement. Once you have a kid’s attention, it is still up to the teacher to deliver a solid, meaningful lesson. Gamification is not a magic bullet, nor does every student need it, but the students who benefit the most from a gamified classroom just so happen to be the ones who most need motivation and engagement.

Teaching Why Facts Still Matter

Teaching Why Facts Still Matter | innovation in learning | Scoop.it
An unavoidable challenge arises when students realize that no matter how many facts support a certain conclusion, denial and dissent remain. Recently, for example, my government class discussed how, faced with a mountain of scientific data, anybody—including politicians—would refute global warming, or the role that humanity plays in its occurrence. Unfortunately, this kind of discussion leads to students’ doubting the power of truth to influence and inform wise decisions, which in turn makes them question the purpose of working hard to learn at all.

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy - | innovation in learning | Scoop.it
The Padagogy Wheel is designed to help educators think – systematically, coherently, and with a view to long term, big-picture outcomes – about how they use mobile apps in their teaching. The Padagogy Wheel is all about mindsets; it’s a way of thinking about digital-age education that meshes together concerns about mobile app features, learning transformation, motivation, cognitive development and long-term learning objectives.

The Padagogy Wheel, though, is not rocket science. It is an everyday device that can be readily used by everyday teachers; it can be applied to everything from curriculum planning and development, to writing learning objectives and designing centered activities. The idea is for the users to respond to the challenges that the Wheel presents for their teaching practices, and to ask themselves the tough questions about their choices and methods.

When Teachers and Technology Let Students Be Masters of Their Own Learning | #LEARNing2LEARN #LEARNingByDoing

When Teachers and Technology Let Students Be Masters of Their Own Learning | #LEARNing2LEARN #LEARNingByDoing | innovation in learning | Scoop.it
Mastery learning is the idea that students should adequately comprehend a given concept before being expected to understand a more advanced one. This idea has a long tradition in educational theory and research. In 1919, superintendent Carleton W. Washburne in Winnetka, Illinois, showed that students could advance at their own pace if they mastered a concept before moving on to something more complicated.

Years later, building on Washburne’s work, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom coined the term “mastery learning.” In 1984, in Bloom’s seminal study, “The 2 Sigma Problem,” he showed that mastery-based one-on-one tutoring is two standard deviations more effective than conventional instruction. (That means it would take the average for a cohort of students from the 50th percentile to the 98th percentile!). Ever since, educators have sought ways to make mastery learning available to all students.

Some key points of the future learning models are:

  • Focussing on a diversity of learning models that incorporate both physical and digital domains instead of a closed classroom.
  • Having school buildings that act as open learning spaces for the local community.
  • More of a focus on individual learning paths and building on the students’ personal strengths.
  • Allowing students to learn also from the real world and through online media.
  • Offering flexibility in terms of when and where learning happens.
