In an interesting move, Salaman Khan is opening up the Khan Academy to crowdsourced videos which will be curated by his team.
I think this is extremely encouraging and opens up a whole new horizon for the development and use of video for learning.

You Tube has just launched YouTube for schools which schools can sign up to using their School Google account.
The service will allow schools to access content from YouTube Edu that can can be futher filtered by "adminstrators." This is designed to facilitate "safe viewing" and I am sure it will be welcomed by many schools worldwide.
Whilst welcoming YouTube's proactive engagement with education; I also have some reservations about this service / You Tube Edu does not host the only good educational content available on YouTube I think it focuses too heavily on 'subjects' and grades rather than the interconnectedness of knowledge. Also the feature to restrict videos to within an institution seems contrary to the open nature of the Internet.
On a positive note it will perhaps enable those schools where YouTube has been foolishly 'banned' to benefit from the wonderful video ecosystem that is YouTube. Via theo kuechel Delete the scoop?

Whilst there may be some justifiable concerns about the place of Khan Academy in the learning ecosysem, it has a vital role to play. It is accessed by hundreds of thousands, if not milllions.. Additional funding means it can expand its reach to include arts and humanities in addition to its core STEM resources. Smarthistory is a good example of how this can work: http://smarthistory.khanacademy.org/ "Much as Wikipedia draws its content from a large number of volunteer professionals, the curated content system for Khan Academy will look to provide a similar outlet for dedicated professionals to develop quality instructional content." Good article, although MOOCs are more massive than personal. For personal adaptive learning, platforms like PulseOn or Knewton are more applicale.
