Access, Engage, and Express: The Lens for Teaching and Learning

Access, Engage, and Express, based on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, is the lens for teaching and learning for all learners.

Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, December 7, 6:15 PM
Access, Engage, and Express (TM) is the lens for understanding how anyone learns best. The reason we came up with these three words was to help educators easily understand their learners using this lens. We want Access, Engage, and Express to be an integral part of their daily approach to teaching and learning.  Using Access, Engage and Express was developed from the Universal Design for Learning® (UDL) principles that are based on neuroscience and how we learn.

"UDL is the framework for Personalized Learning."
Barbara Bray's curator insight, December 8, 10:29 AM

Why do teachers and learners need a lens for learning? This post will share the importance of understanding how you learn best. Access is about how you transform and process information into useable knowledge. Engage is how you best engage with content. Express is how you demonstrate what you know and understand. If you use this lens, you and your teacher become partners in learning.

Personalized Learning Heavy on Rhetoric, Light on Results

Personalized Learning Heavy on Rhetoric, Light on Results | Innovatieve eLearning | Scoop.it

"A new policy brief recently released by the National Education Policy Center suggests that digital technology has not influenced education for the better.

The report’s author, Noel Enyedy, an associate professor of education and information studies at the University of California-Los Angeles, said the lack of results from technology has many origins.  Enyedy suggests that the chief reason for this is that there are no clear suggestions pertaining to what “Personalized Instruction” actually means."

I hate when they try to equate technology use with learning achievement. No one ever rates the quality of a house construction by the type of hammer the builders used. Gadgets are tools. Its how you use them that determines their effectiveness.

Cláudio De Musacchio's curator insight, December 2, 2:18 PM

7 Ways to Deal With Digital Distractions in the Classroom | Edudemic | Innovatieve eLearning | Scoop.it

To educators who embrace new technologies wholeheartedly, digital devices are a powerful tool for creating an engaged and individualized educational experience. To those that are a little more hesitant, digital devices seem more like a quick route to Instagram and Facebook — that is, to distractions that interfere with the educational experience, rather than boosting it.

Edgar Mata's curator insight, December 8, 10:42 PM

In principle, I agree with a lot of what Shirky writes—multiple studies confirm the cognitive toll that distractions and multitasking inflict on learning; his argument that social media is designed both in form and content to distract has merit; and as an email-addict myself, I know that feeling of “instant and satisfying gratification” he describes all too well. Suggesting, however, that enforcing a technology ban is the solution to students’ lack of engagement strikes me both as insecure and a wee bit simplistic.

15+ Ways of Teaching Every Student to Code (Even Without a Computer) - Edutopia

15+ Ways of Teaching Every Student to Code (Even Without a Computer) - Edutopia | Innovatieve eLearning | Scoop.it

"According to Code.org, 90 percent of U.S. schools are not teaching any computer science. Eyebrows have been raised this year as the U.K. passed a plan to educate every child how to code.

In my opinion, parents of every student in every school at every level should demand that all students be taught how to code. They don't need this skill because they'll all go into it as a career -- that isn't realistic -- but because it impacts every career in the 21st century world. Any country recognizing that will benefit in the long term. Here's how you can start."

Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners

Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners | Innovatieve eLearning | Scoop.it
While acknowledging that the whole concept of self-determination – or ‘Google
learning’ as it has been called, pejoratively, in certain circles – is fraught with the potential for missing the point, being distracted into rabbit warrens or just getting bad information, we would like to emphasise that this is only a potential.

===> Any learning theory is only as good as the way in which it is applied and worked through, and we have seen it produce highly successful results where correctly applied, in the right circumstances. <===

Watch this space for chapter and verse, as we will soon be publishing case studies of several recent programmes that feature high levels of learner self-direction.

Learners are changing, learning is changing – and heutagogy can give important clues about rebalancing the burden of responsibilities and permissions in an always-on, networked, instructorless, post-course world.

Interesting listing of MOOC-related articles from current sources.  There seem to be some interesting ideas floating around addressing the luke-warm presentation of MOOC courses.  Maybe getting the socialization piece nailed down will help MOOCs to become a better-accepted piece of distance education and professional development.
