At the centre of this article there is truth, which is that our children need "new" skills and new ways of developing and using the "old" ones. However, I think there is room for them all, if the curriculum is formulated the right way. Inquiry-based learning, letting the kids ask a question and then search for the answer using a number of resources, is definitely the way to go. Personally I think there will ALWAYS be a place for being able to do maths the old fashioned way, so you understand how it works, but there is also a time to let the technology take you further, to increase that understanding. Room for both.

There are reasons for understanding the "way things work" and there are reasons for knowing one's history--as Winston Churchill said, "Those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it." I think it's more about how we can utilise technology in the classroom. It's good to see that some teachers go looking for this lind of stuff. Others will come along after it has been proven. Some won't come along unless pushed.

edshelf is a pretty neat curation tool that in this case Glenda Stewart-Smith of Surrey School District #36 in Canada has used to put together this collection of iPhone and iPad apps to cover all kinds of mathematical concepts in fun and engaging ways. Does new technology conflict with or complement established teaching and learning? What is the impact on the teaching profession as we have traditionally known it? Will the power of the internet, with new innovations such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), create an unstoppable ‘avalanche’ of education reform, or are these reforms a false revolution? Can the value of face-to-face quality learning and student-teacher relationships ever really be questioned, at any level of education? Will the class room, lecture theatre, and traditional notion of education space – schools and universities – be usurped by a screen, online and distance learning, or alternative spaces such as the workplace, home, or concert-hall?

Absolutely Katie! For both learners and teachers that ownership is important. As someone who has 2 (my personal iPad and my teaching iPad) I'd also recommend that one has the most important/used apps on both (it has happened to me to be missing an important app on my teaching iPad once! Quickly corrected :-)

The technology they use in their personal lives just makes sense for use in their learning as well. If a student badly wanted a new tablet or app for his or her own personal use but wanted nothing to do with it for any kind of learning whatsoever, we may need to look at the disconnect.
But there are other reasons why education consistently turns to technology

Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation theory is the basis for several different models of organizational change, and it is the theory that is taught in most instructional technology programs at the Masters or Doctorate level. Organizations will not change until the people within them are ready to change, and those people have differing attitudes towards change. In a one-to-one program, often the resistance isn’t towards using technology but instead it’s resistance towards change itself.
