My fondest memories of school are of the occasions on which I made stuff. When I think about what other aspects of my learning I enjoyed most, I always come back to the basic principle of creativity. Getting me involved in creative tasks that result in tangible outcomes was one of the ways my teachers ensured that I remained engaged and enjoyed the process of learning. Via Nik Peachey

Playing is an important part of human development and life. We learn by doing, socializing exchanging ideas and collaborating with our peers. However, we grow up and all of a sudden – voilà – school appears and playing takes a back seat. What has happened? Teaching, understood as instruction, does not consider it relevant for learning.

"If you are looking for something different from Safari to broswe the internet on your tablet or iphone, here are some alternatives. Some of them are really efficient for using with students as they can play flash content and support webpages that Safari cannot." Via John Evans
The comments below are adapted from a presentation I put together for senior policymakers in a developing country who have high level oversight of the use of technology in thousands of schools. Complemented by a separate discussion about 'worst practices' in ICT use in education, there were meant to be provocative, and to serve as a springboard for subsequent discussion and debate. Web search can be a remarkable tool for students, and a bit of instruction in how to search for academic sources will help your students become critical thinkers and independent learners.

"All higher education instructors have been there – you are happily cruising along in class, lecturing, discussing, engaging, whatever your milieu, and suddenly the theme from the Exorcist is emanating from someone’s pocket, purse, backpack, or from right on top of their desk. You have become the victim of disruptive technology in the classroom... One solution to dealing with this phenomenon is to strictly and sternly ban all portable electronic communication devices from the classroom and to react swiftly and mercilessly the first time someone dares to cross that boundary. While you will never prevent all interruptions, a second, more subtle solution is to embrace this disruptive technology and incorporate it into your teaching." Via EDTC@UTB
The Networked Student was inspired by CCK08, a Connectivism course offered by George Siemens and Stephen Downes during fall 2008. It depicts an actual project completed by Wendy Drexler's high school students. The Networked Student concept map was inspired by Alec Couros' Networked Teacher. I hope that teachers will use it to help their colleagues, parents, and students understand networked learning in the 21st century. Via Nik Peachey
