Teachers who work silently, don’t tweet, blog and discuss ideas with people around the world are obsolete. Teachers are no longer working locally but globally and it’s our job to share what we do and see what others are doing. If a teacher is no longer learning then he shouldn’t be teaching other people.

 

We should all be tweeting, blogging and sharing what works and doesn’t work, get and give advice to and from co-workers around the world. We should constantly be improving our craft because professional development isn’t a 3 hour workshop once a month but a lifelong process.

Suppose you are teaching an introductory biology course and your next lesson deals with genetics. You would like to prepare your students for the upcoming class by asking them to think about the topic...

 


The instructor is now ready to adjust the classroom activities or lesson flow, and improvise if necessary. The flow is pretty much predetermined, but the words used in class will arise from the student responses and, most importantly, will be influenced by the feedback from the live class.


Typically, the live class is shown a representative set of responses, and the authors of the responses are invited to comment and elaborate. The rest of the class is encouraged to challenge and suggest alternatives. Properly handled, this can be a teaching opportunity that goes beyond the course content.


Students have an opportunity to practice critical thinking and communication skills. The course content is enriched because the wording actually comes from the live class, which makes the lesson fresh and interesting to the students.

The culmination of my quest for more powerful learning grounded in theory and research came when recently I conducted an experiment in pushing constructionism into the digital age.

 

Constructionism is based on two types of construction. First, it asserts that learning is an active process, in which people actively construct knowledge from their experience in the world. People don’t get ideas; they make them. This aspect of construction comes from the constructivist theory of knowledge development by Jean Piaget. To Piaget’s concept, Papert added another type of construction, arguing that people construct new knowledge with particular effectiveness when they are engaged in constructing personally meaningful products.

Imagine my surprise and joy when I realized that I had arrived at constructionism prior to knowing that such a theory even existed. I believe that thousands of other educators are unknowingly working within the constructionist paradigm as well. Although many within the Maker movement are aware that it has it’s roots in constructionism, the movement is gaining impressive momentum without the majority of Makers realizing that there is a strong theoretical foundation behind their work.

 

After I came to understand this connection between my practices and the supporting theoretical framework I was better able to focus and refine my practice. Even more importantly, I felt more confident and powerful in forging ahead with further experiments in the learning situations I design for my learners.

Sometimes what is most obvious is what we do not see readily. Whitehead suggested this was the case, but other, including the Buddha and Jesus, said similar things. We need to examine what we are doing, be aware of what we want from education. This takes leadership that moves away from easy, facile ways of doing things with 7 habits, 4 methods, etc. and makes real and meaningful change.

 

We simply cannot continue to add more changes without removing some of the architecture that currently exists. This includes with technology.

Think about how you or the people you work with approach the creation of a blended learning lesson plan. The first steps of coming up with and flushing out your initial idea. Then, scouring the web to find safe, factually accurate sites that are not blocked by your school filters and checking the fine print …

 

This method of teaching does require a certain amount of bravery. There is a very real chance that when a student asks you a question (How do I add media? How do I change the font? How do I import pictures? etc. etc.) you will have to say the dreaded “I don’t know”. But the neat thing is, your students are ok with this. You’re all learning as you go. More often than not another child in the class will be using the same site or will have at least used it before. If a classmate knows the answer, they can step into the role of teacher – from which much confidence is gained and leadership skills are learned.


Even the most reserved kid really enjoys teaching their teacher a trick or two. If no one knows the answer, they can collaborate to find the solution; an activity that provides important life skills with many real-world applications. All while leaving the initiative, process development and ownership of the learning itself right where it belongs, in the hands of the learners.


Gust MEES: I started with it in 2002 already and was a pioneer in my country, BUT I got BEST results! Make sure to work TOGETHER as a TEAM with the students, learners, create ALSO some groups where the BEST work together with the weakest. YOU will love it later and YOU will miss it as it gives YOU a direct feedback of WHAT THEY learned and YOU adjust on demand and necessity... WHEN the BEST feel boring, give THEM a special task to motivate THEM ;) ===> Adjust <===.

Why haven't education reform efforts amounted to much? Because they start with the wrong problem, says John Abbott, director of the 21st Century Learning Initiative. Overhauling the educational paradigm means replacing the metaphor — the concept of the world and its inhabitants as machine-like entities — that has shaped the education system, as well as many other aspects of our culture.

 

Creating “Collaborative Learning Communities”

“It is essential to view learning as a total community responsibility,” he says, and to expect no short cuts. Children need to be integrated, fully contributing members of the broader community, so they can feel useful and valued. (It is not just the children who need this, he adds; healthy communities also need children.)

.

On a practical level, the most powerful lever for change, Abbott says, is people coming together to “rethink the role of community in the learning process,” agreeing how to divide up responsibilities among professional teachers and other community members, and then launching small pilot projects that are true to their new vision. These efforts will build on each other, he says, and large-scale change will follow.

Some people may look at you cross-eyed after you make a kind gesture. “C’mon,” they’ll think, “why are you really doing this? No one does something for nothing.” Then, when they realize there’s no catch, something magical will happen. You’ll be viewed in an entirely new light.


Just think how far your kindness will go toward building trust, strengthening your relationships, developing teamwork and camaraderie, enhancing your reputation and sense of self-worth — not to mention, adding to your karma.

So as this generation of students comes up through school, we will really have to adjust the way they receive information.  We cannot stay stagnant.  We'll lose every student out there.  And I wouldn't blame them.

We need to have higher expectations for ourselves as educators, parents, and policymakers; and we need to have higher expectations for our students -- they will meet the bar wherever it is set.

 

To address this challenge we must revolutionize what we teach, how we teach and how we measure the results. Fundamental and rapid change is necessary -- now, not sometime in the future. Solving our nation's education crisis will take commitment and investment in proven approaches to project-based learning.

 

We have to convert our thinking from maximizing content coverage and "teaching to the test" to using methods that help students understand the applications of what they learn.

We have to educate in ways today that prepare students and teachers for the world they live now and tomorrow. We seem to lack the will and the leadership. We have talking head syndrome. The best job an educator could have is to be in the classroom, not be a principal.

Gone are the days where students sit neatly in rows all prepared with the same back to school supplies ready to consume instruction. As the 2012/13 school year approaches, one thing is clear. One-size-fits-all is out and personalization is in. This doesn’t only apply to the classroom instruction, it also applies to the mobile devices your students choose to use for learning.

Gust MEES: Don't forget about IT-Security and be aware of the malware! "Nobody is Perfect!", so ALL "OS" are vulnerable and especially smartphones and any other device connecting to Internet also! And there are also a lot of Apps around who are malicious...

In 21st Century while using "Bring Your Own Device" (Hashtag for Twitter = #BYOD) there is a MUST to know about basic IT-Security knowledge! The teachers role is NOT anymore to be the MOST important person, but the LEARNER!

 

So the teacher needs to have that basic knowledge to share it with its learners and to try to keep a safe Learning Workspace... Online and Offline, in the "internal learning network" and also in the "external learning network"!

 

As Teachers, Educators and Instructors we have to deal with Apps, OpenSource software, Freeware, different OS devices, so we need to know about the risks and dangers! We need to know how to get protected these devices also!

 

It's not ONLY the IT-Admin's responsibility, IT-Security is the responsibility of ALL of us!!!

When I rescooped your post, I did not realize I was erasing someone else's comments. I thought I was just cleaning up extra-text that had been auto-inserted at some point. I was also concerned that there was a malware warning included in what I thought was auto-generated text; I did not want to keep links with the post that might spread malware.

I am still learning about the ins and outs of ScoopIt; it is unfortunate that you jumped immediately to the conclusion that I was censoring you because that was not my intention. Per your request, I will remove the re-scoop post my topic, since I now understand the comments were inserted by a user but do not want to share links that might include malware. OK, everything alright now. My apologies for having reacted also that way, but when it is about Censorship of my own text...

Concerning "malware", You don't have to fear about my links, just have a look at my profile on the bottom of my free IT-Security courses (links above in the text) and You will understand that they are secure ;)

Hi Sandy,

It is important that learners get told how to protect their BYOD-Devices and to know also about the dangers with it. So that's why I included thta special text with links. When now someone makes a rescoop of your "rescooped" censored #scoopit then it would:

1.) Not include my original text with advice and links
2.) Other people who will "rescoop" from your #scoopit will also not get that important knoledge
