Coursework to be assessed for academic credit by member institutions
Alfredo Corell's insight:

“university” that will allow students to study courses from 31 institutions around the world for free online is to launch this week – and is billed as a more attractive option than massive open online courses.

Students who complete an Open Educational Resources University course will be able to pay a fee to have their work assessed for academic credit, which would then be recognised by all the universities participating in the OERu.

How Social Media Is Being Used In Education

How Social Media Is Being Used In Education | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Recently, the Babson Survey Research Group and Pearson conducted a survey of nearly 8,000 faculty members in higher education to find out more about how faculty are using social media.
Alfredo Corell's insight:

While it seems that most faculty have adopted some social media use in their personal life, fewer have done so professionally. And their feelings about using social media professionally (in and out of the classroom) seem to be pretty mixed. New Algorithm Assesses the Quality of Wikipedia Articles

New Algorithm Assesses the Quality of Wikipedia Articles | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it
An algorithm that assesses the quality of Wikipedia articles could reassure visitors and help focus editors on entries that need improving.
Alfredo Corell's insight:

Today, we get an answer thanks to the work of Xiangju Qin and Pádraig Cunningham at University College Dublin in Ireland. These guys have developed an algorithm that assesses the quality of Wikipedia pages based on the authoritativeness of the editors involved and the longevity of the edits they have made.

“The hypothesis is that pages with significant contributions from authoritative contributors are likely to be high-quality pages,” they say. Given this information, visitors to Wikipedia should be able to judge the quality of any article much more accurately.

Technology Will Not Replace Teachers | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Technology can open doors, expand minds, and change the world. That may be true, but it's not the panacea that it's been made out to be. As much innovation as the iPad may bring to the classroom, it's not going to replace a teacher anytime soon.

Nextly is a free web app which allows you to create collections of web pages that can be easily navigated as a tour on any device.

Via the integrated Add Page feature or the accompanying bookmarklet you can add just about any web page to one of your collections, as well as content coming from Twitter, Facebook or RSS feeds and other social media.

A unique characterizing feature of Nextly is that the content of a collection gets pre-loaded when accessed by a user, making the browsing through elements of the collection quite fast.

When browsing through a Nextly collection all original web pages are reproduced as they appear on the web, and are rapidly pre-fecthed to provide a faster loading experience.

My comment: Potentially a valuable content curation tool to organize specific sets of articles and distribute them in a format that is effective ad easy to access. It can be used also as an effective new reader and news discovery tool.

Free to use.

5 Creative Uses Of PowerPoint Presentations You Haven’t Explored Yet

5 Creative Uses Of PowerPoint Presentations You Haven’t Explored Yet | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Death by PowerPoint is a popular term. It’s unfair that PowerPoint gets the stick as there are more than a few presentation tools around. As anyone who has taken the pains to make a memorable PowerPoint presentation will tell you – the secret of the steak is in the sizzle. The sizzle also comes and stops at creativity. If you have creativity by your side, you can use PowerPoint as your canvas.

5 Creative Uses Of PowerPoint Presentations

Karen Ford's curator insight, November 4, 2013 12:53 PM

I think "death by PowerPoint" is used so often because so many users have not "taken the pains to make a memorable..." presentation and the concept of creativity might not have even been considered. Not totally sure what the answer is, but I do believe that if more individuals could have their eyes opened to the potential that PowerPoint has, we might be able to get passed the "death" issue. That means we have to get the great ideas to the teachers and  their students... not just telling them, but perhaps showing them...
