What Do Schools Risk By Going ‘Full Google’?

What Do Schools Risk By Going ‘Full Google’? | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Google launches new tools for teachers and expands its brand among students.

Alfredo Corell's insight:

Classroom enables a teacher to create a “class” at the touch of a button. She or he can upload syllabus materials, whether text, audio or video, and send out assignments on the class news feed.

Teachers see instantly who has turned in their homework. They can start a class discussion and provide feedback and grades; students can see what’s due and what’s late. The whole package integrates with the rest of Google’s apps, like Google Docs.

Still, not everyone is ready to embrace Google’s free education applications.

8 Important Questions About Technology and Learning | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it
There are so many different challenges that technology integration in the classroom presents teachers. From budgets to hesitant parents to broken devices and totally re-vamping your lesson plans and constantly tweaking with lots of trial and error.
Alfredo Corell's insight:
Important Questions About Technology and Learning
  1. What do we want technology to do in schools?
  2. Does more money equal increased learning?
  3. If we buy a lot of expensive technology and sometimes use it ineffectively, or dangerously, what does that get us?
  4. Are we asking the right questions about technology, learning, and schools?
  5. What world will our students exit school into?
  6. What skills will they need to be successful? Collaboration - Communication - Creativity - Divergent thinking
  7. We need technology to help foster these skills, and point our students in the right direction
  8. Is the way we are using technology now turning our students ‘off’ to the people and the world around them?

An absolutely significant skill in any research or investigation, for educators and learners in the digital age - the curation of content- with a clear focus or question in mind, the capacity to target a search field, sift through, reflect on and make decisions about the most suitable resource or evidence to use. What is public domain?
Works in the public domain are those whose copyrights have expired, have been forfeited, or are inapplicable. Finding something on the internet does not mean it is in the public domain.

These terms will come up often as we discuss free photo sources. Read over the terms and conditions of each site you try so you know exactly when and what type of attribution is required.

In this post, we'll break down more than 50 different sources and tools for visual content. We'll cover the following (click on any section to be taken to that area directly):

Alfredo Corell's insight:
About ScissorsflyIn the spirit of freedom and creativity, we designed Scissorsfly. For the first time ever, you will be equipped with something that frees your imagination to creatively collect and organize everything you love on the web, and share them with friends.

Scissorsfly originates from an open hackathon hosted at LinkedIn, when Sillicon Valley tech talents from places like Google, Twitter, LinkedIn, or CMU, MIT, Stanford, Berkerly came to play. We won the championship with the idea called ClipIt, which becomes the magic scissors at your hand today.

Web 1.0 gave you static webpages. Web 2.0 gives you interactions and collaborations with the web and the world. Scissorsfly will give you not only that, but also the initiative to tailor the web at will. It will be an experience beyond the long lasting web 2.0...

Finally, you can run wild with these scissors.
Their MissionCollecting and organizing information is really important to us. However, it could be painful from time to time. We built Scissorsfly for you to enjoy the process.
TeamWe are an early stage startup based in Mountain View (CA) and Chicago (IL). Our team is small and close-knit, with both strong engineering (e.g. Google, Yahoo!, Linkedin, eBay) and research (e.g. security, data mining, machine learning) backgrounds. For anything interesting, drop us a line at support@scissorsfly.com.

Abstract

Peer grading offers a scalable and sustainable way of providing assessment and feedback to a massive student population. However, currently there is little empirical evidence to support the credentials of peer grading as a learning assessment method in the MOOC context. To address this research need, this study examined 1,825 peer grading assignments collected from a Coursera MOOC with the purpose of investigating the reliability and validity of peer grading, as well as its perceived effects on students’ MOOC learning experience. The empirical findings provide evidence that the aggregate of student graders can provide peer grading scores fairly consistent and highly similar to instructor grading scores. Student survey responses also indicate peer grading activities to be well received by a majority of MOOC students, who believe it was fair, useful, beneficial, and would recommend it to be included in future MOOC offerings. Based on the empirical results, this study concludes with a set of principles for designing and implementing peer grading activities in the MOOC context.
