MOOCs are transforming higher education and providing fodder for scientific research | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

"When campus president Wallace Loh walked into Juan Uriagereka's office last August, he got right to the point. “We need courses for this thing — yesterday!” Uriagereka, associate provost for faculty affairs at the University of Maryland in College Park, knew exactly what his boss meant. Campus administrators around the world had been buzzing for months about massive open online courses, or MOOCs: Internet-based teaching programmes designed to handle thousands of students simultaneously, in part using the tactics of social-networking websites."

Alfredo Corell's insight:

By Jeff Dunn

With a public four year in-state degree costing $89,044 on average it’s easy to see why anyone would be looking for alternatives. MOOCs, Massive Open Online Courses, may be the solution. Since the first MOOC in 2008, this phenomenon has been spreading amongst very well accredited colleges. The movement has grown rapidly with over 100 courses already scheduled for 2013.

Latest news, events and thoughts about MOOCs | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

I present here a compilation of news, thoughts, and movements in the MOOCs field.

Alfredo Corell's insight:

- A main concern is the low level of courses completions (below 10%):

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/17/measuring-the-success-of-online-education , one can consider 20% completion a success: http://technorati.com/technology/article/are-massive-open-online-courses-moocs/

- In the same line, a Coursera's MOOC had 180.000 students, but less than 26.000 are now running: http://www.hackcollege.com/blog/2013/01/22/duke-university-professors-mooc-has-180000-students.html

-On the other hand US universities are thinking to link a first free MOOC with a second official course for credit in the named "MOOC2Grade":
