8 Important Questions About Technology and Learning

8 Important Questions About Technology and Learning | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it
There are so many different challenges that technology integration in the classroom presents teachers. From budgets to hesitant parents to broken devices and totally re-vamping your lesson plans and constantly tweaking with lots of trial and error.
Alfredo Corell's insight:
Important Questions About Technology and Learning
  1. What do we want technology to do in schools?
  2. Does more money equal increased learning?
  3. If we buy a lot of expensive technology and sometimes use it ineffectively, or dangerously, what does that get us?
  4. Are we asking the right questions about technology, learning, and schools?
  5. What world will our students exit school into?
  6. What skills will they need to be successful? Collaboration - Communication - Creativity - Divergent thinking
  7. We need technology to help foster these skills, and point our students in the right direction
  8. Is the way we are using technology now turning our students ‘off’ to the people and the world around them?

Alfredo Corell's insight:

Mobile Learning is about self-actuated personalization.

As learning practices and technology tools change, mobile learning itself will continue to evolve. For 2013, the focus is on a variety of challenges, from how learners access content to how the idea of a “curriculum” is defined.

Technology like tablets PCs, apps, and access to broadband internet are lubricating the shift to mobile learning, but a truly immersive mobile learning environment goes beyond the tools for learning to the lives and communities valued by each individual learner.

There are tons of different apps, web tools, books, events, and more in the database, and the list is growing as people add their favorite products and offer reviews of other products. In the interest of sharing as many tools as we can (since we know they’ll be useful to at least some of you!) we’ve selected five at random from the GEDB’s Product Reviews section. Below are snippets of the listings you’ll find including how to use each tool in education.

The Framework presents a holistic view of 21st century teaching and learning that combines a discrete focus on 21st century student outcomes (a blending of specific skills, content knowledge, expertise and literacies) with innovative support systems to help students master the multi-dimensional abilities required of them in the 21st century.

This is an excellent summary of 21st Century learning!

Selin Gelinci's curator insight, October 31, 2013 11:40 AM

This is a useful resource as  it explores further into the framework for the 21st century learning. It combines a discrete focus on the outcomes, specific skillsa and content knowledge that should be gained through the learning program. The diagram helps understanding further into the support system and how it all collaborates. This is benefical to me as a future teacher as it gives me a clear understanding of how i can manage my time effectively and make sure i am always covering aspects that are relevant to the 21st century learning.

Students as Curators of Their Learning Topics

Students as Curators of Their Learning Topics | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Must-read article on ClutterMuseum.com by Leslie M-B, exploring in depth the opportunity to have students master their selected topics by "curating" them, rather than by reading and memorizing facts about them.

"Critical and creative thinking should be prioritized over remembering content"

"That students should learn to think for themselves may seem like a no-brainer to many readers, but if you look at the textbook packages put out by publishers, you’ll find that the texts and accompanying materials (for both teachers and students) assume students are expected to read and retain content—and then be tested on it.

Instead, between middle school (if not earlier) and college graduation, students should practice—if not master—how to question, critique, research, and construct an argument like an historian."

This is indeed the critical point. Moving education from an effort to memorize things on which then to be tested, to a collaborative exercise in creating new knowledge and value by pulling and editing together individual pieces of content, resources and tools that allow the explanation/illustration of a topic from a specific viewpoint/for a specific need.

And I can't avoid to rejoice and second her next proposition: "What if we shifted the standards’ primary emphasis from content, and not to just the development of traditional skills—basic knowledge recall, document interpretation, research, and essay-writing—but to the cultivation of skills that challenge students to make unconventional connections, skills that are essential for thriving in the 21st century?"

What are these skills, you may ask. Here is a good reference where to look them up: http://www.p21.org/storage/documents/P21_Framework_Definitions.pdf (put together by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills)

Recommended. Good stuff. 9/10

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, August 13, 2013 7:43 PM

I had a similar conversation yesterday and as I prepare my lit review this thinking has emerged. It is less about content and more about skills, attitudes, habits, practices, etc. in learning.

Priscilla Der's curator insight, April 6, 2014 10:12 PM

This article is a reminder that as we are curating content as teachers so are students. Rather then memorizing or reciting textbook facts, students should be able to steer and set their own learning goals (this is where PBL) comes into mind.
