A round-up of interactive video options

A round-up of interactive video options | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education |

"We take for granted that we can interact with text, but up until recently it’s been a challenge to interact (read/write/talk) with media...

Being able to interact with video allows us to personalize video-based instruction, by leading learners to the segment of video we like them to watch, by adding voice-overs, notes, pop-ups, screenshots, maps, references, pauses. It also allows learners to create video with even more depth and features and can the interaction can be used to support media literacy learning."

Alfredo Corell's insight:
 • Created for educators, EDpuzzle allows teachers to set up classes, to assign specific video lessons and to engage students in creating their own video lessons. Analytics share which students watch, when they last watched, and whether they watched at home or at school.
 • Mozilla PopcornMaker is a powerful multiple-layer video editor that invites users to remix videos to include pop-ups, text boxes, images, maps (even in streetview), as well as Wikipedia articles that continue to update.
 • ThingLink for video, looks so promising.
 • eduCanon is an interactive learning platform into which teachers may embed questions and any html object.
 • TED-Ed lessons offer educators the opportunity to customize a TED video to meet their specific instructional needs.
 • Write-on Video is an iPad app that allows users to annotate and animate videos and pictures, by arranging the elements into storyboards and slideshows enhanced by free-hand drawing, text boxes, stamps, and sound clips.

A good overview on the available tools to make video interactive.

The eduCanon platform is a tool for teachers to build lessons with interactive timed questions and engaging video content. Already, we've been amazed by the creative and inspirational uses of eduCanon by teachers--for flipped and blended learning environments.

Hey! Ben from eduCanon. Love all the great reactions! I wanted to follow up and let everyone know that I was a teacher and know the need to be upfront: eduCanon's current functionality will ALWAYS be free :) We're building out premium features, but that will never restrict you from your current uses/content! Also thought I'd throw out a little about what we've recently released:

1. You can now use videos from YouTube, Vimeo, and TeacherTube!

2. We have free response (open-ended) questions in our premium version, as well as gradebook export, and lesson search through the eduCanon database.

Flipped and Blended Interactive Video Learning Platform
Alfredo Corell's insight:
I've been testing it and its fabulous!!!

What is eduCanon?

eduCanon is an online learning environment to build and share interactive video lessons. Teachers begin with any YouTube, Vimeo, or TeacherTube video content (screencasts, Khan Academy, Minute Physics, TED, NOVA, etc.) and transform what is traditionally passive content into an active experience for students. By time-linking activities that students engage with as the video progresses the content is segmented into digestible components - increasing student engagement and, through our real-time monitoring, informing the next day’s lesson planning.

How is eduCanon used?

eduCanon is used in a 1:1 student learning environment. Teachers have used our interface in class as a blended tool, assigned students an eduCanon lesson as homework in a flipped setting, and even asked students to create their own eduCanon lesson as a higher-Bloom's project! eduCanon is flexible to suit the resources and teaching style of your classroom.

What browsers and devices do you support?

eduCanon is a webapp. While eduCanon works on all major browsers, the best experience comes from Google Chrome and Safari. It works on Macs, PCs, and is even responsive to iPads. You can even embed it into your website or blog!
