B2B Decision-Making: The Proof Is In the Influencers

B2B Decision-Making: The Proof Is In the Influencers | In Midstream - Tracking companies and government departments in pursuit of new revenue streams | Scoop.it

A major goal for B2B companies is reaching decision-makers to keep their product top-of-mind and ultimately result in sales. However, given the proliferation of content and general noise in the B2B industry, it’s hard to keep track of who is actually influencing buying decisions.

Based on surveying more than 1,900 decision-makers, our Influence Index revealed the major influencers impacting business decision-makers and what they purchase.

...So the question is: once you’ve identified these top influencers, how do you make an impact? You need to ensure these influencers have the right information on your product when decision-makers are doing research/asking questions and then making their decisions. The key to being part of the conversation is a steady stream of relevant content....

The business of big data audits: monetizing fairness

The business of big data audits: monetizing fairness | In Midstream - Tracking companies and government departments in pursuit of new revenue streams | Scoop.it
I gave a talk to the invitation-only NYC CTO Club a couple of weeks ago about my fears about big data modeling, namely: that big data modeling is discriminatory, that big data modeling increases in...
Doug Hudgeon's insight:

"I shouldn’t have been surprised when one of them followed up with me to talk about a possible business model for “fairness audits.” The idea is that, what with the recent bad press about discrimination in big data modeling (some of the audience had actually worked with the Podesta team), there will likely be a business advantage to being able to claim that your models are fair. So someone should develop those tests that companies can take. Quick, someone, monetize fairness!"

Security software that's meant to prevent data loss in firms is shifting the focus to employee behavior, monitoring activity round-the-clock in search of bad intent. But will bosses go too far?
Doug Hudgeon's insight:
"Companies currently use software to block an employee from copying or emailing an unauthorized document. But according to a study by the research group Gartner, only 5 percent of that software traces every move, looking for bad actors. By 2018, the study projects, it'll be 80 percent."

SolarWinds: A Great Business Model, And Tremendous Upside

SolarWinds: A Great Business Model, And Tremendous Upside | In Midstream - Tracking companies and government departments in pursuit of new revenue streams | Scoop.it

SolarWinds (SWI) is in the business of selling network management and systems management products to IT professionals. The company was founded in 1999, went public in 2009, and last year recorded $335 million

Doug Hudgeon's insight:

Not noble, but probably effective:

"SWI typically tries to release a product that has 80% of the functionality of the competition, and then sell it at 10% of the price. A good analogy would be the relationship between a risky biotech firm and a generic drug manufacturer. Except in this case, SWI doesn't have to wait 20 years for a patent to expire."
