Information Literacy 2.0 | American Libraries Magazine

Information Literacy 2.0 | American Libraries Magazine | Information Technology Learn IT - Teach IT | Scoop.it
American Libraries Magazine, the magazine of the American Library Association, delivers news and information about the library community.

Ideas about information literacy have always adapted to changes in the information environment. The birth of the web made it necessary for librarians to shift more towards teaching search strategies and evaluation of sources. The tool-focused “bibliographic instruction” approach was later replaced by the skill-focused “information literacy” approach. Now, with the growth of Web 2.0 technologies, we need to start shifting towards providing instruction that will enable our patrons to be successful information seekers in the Web 2.0 environment, where the process of evaluation is quite a bit more nuanced.

Forecast 2020: Web 3.0+ and Collective Intelligence

Forecast 2020: Web 3.0+ and Collective Intelligence | Information Technology Learn IT - Teach IT | Scoop.it

"Let’s focus on the resulting element — the “collective intelligence”. Think about it as billions of human brains working using future super computers as a platform. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Srini Devadas described “collective intelligence” as consisting of two pillars: cloud computing and crowd computing. Cloud computing is using the Internet as a platform and making access to information available to everyone. Crowd computing, according to him, involves the analysis of information into “collective intelligence” far beyond what we have today."

Internet Search Challenge: A Shark, a Kayak and a Tree Octopus | Information Technology Learn IT - Teach IT | Scoop.it

Internet Investigator Carl Heine walks us through another interesting case.  ~ Dennis

Back in May 2009 I posted a visual information fluency challenge about a shark and a kayak.

I'm revisiting that challenge because of a new tool I came across recently. Error Level Analysis is a software application that can be used to detect possible jpeg image tampering or touch-ups.

Microsoft Academic Search

Microsoft Academic Search | Information Technology Learn IT - Teach IT | Scoop.it

Find information about academic papers, authors, conferences, journals, and organizations from multiple sources.

~ Here's another example of serendiptous discovery.  I picked this specialized search tool up from my Literacy with ICT Diigo group weekly email.  Thanks to Phil Taylor for sharing the link.

Microsoft's Academic Search Engine offers a number of ways to search for research about any topic.  It's an intriguing, more visuual, alternative to Google's Acadmenic search.

The academic map gives you a world view of universities. You can then drill down into their databases, viewing research by topic, discipline, author.  The visual tools enhance the experience and provide entry points for searchers of different levels of expertise.

Comparing organizations by citation count is another innovative way to investigate data.  All of the tools give you a variety of ways to compare and consider information from academic sources.

This is a find! Click in and explore! ~ Dennis

Helping Students Own the Learning Environment | Powerful Learning Practice

Helping Students Own the Learning Environment | Powerful Learning Practice | Information Technology Learn IT - Teach IT | Scoop.it

"Reflection is such a huge tool for my own learning, and I feel like I’m getting better and better at finding ways to do this with students. It isn’t that I have never used student reflections to improve my own teaching. But now I’m learning how to get students to be better at making meaningful reflection part of their own learning process.
Here’s an example of what that means for my classroom practice. As we finished the last series of labs, one of my science classes felt that while they liked their current groupings, they could do better work with a triad instead of the traditional 4-person lab team. They believed that they had too much downtime, not enough to do, and that having smaller groups would alleviate this problem..."
