Phil Bradley's weblog: The destruction of digital data

Phil Bradley's weblog: The destruction of digital data | Information Specialist Training | Scoop.it

The EU ruling on the right to be forgotten seems to have opened up a rather nasty little can of worms, and I can't see that it's going to be getting any better in the near future. The Supreme Court of British Columbia issued a temporary injunction last week, ordering Google to delete websites not only from the Canadian version of Google, but across the world as well. (The background to this story is about a company that wants to stop a rival selling gadgets that were created as a result of stolen trade secrets. This company wants Google to stop linking to the rival sites - more than 300 of them.) ...

FEATURE - Makerbot Replicator 2: 3D Printing Tips From an Early Adopter

FEATURE - Makerbot Replicator 2: 3D Printing Tips From an Early Adopter | Information Specialist Training | Scoop.it

3D printers are all the rage in public libraries, but they are just starting to creep into the academic sphere. At Penfield Library, which is at the State University of New York (SUNY)–Oswego, we have set up a successful 3D printing program using a MakerBot Replicator 2. SUNY–Oswego is a comprehensive 4-year college on the shore of Lake Ontario. Most of our students are undergraduates, but we offer a few master’s programs. Our engineering program is just getting started, and it currently only has courses in software and electrical engineering. We have a robust technology program, which is part of the university’s School of Education. Both the engineering and technology programs have their own 3D printers; however, students must be a part of those programs to use them. The 3D printer at Penfield Library is open to all.

Capira Integrates StackMap into Mobile App - The Digital Shift | Information Specialist Training | Scoop.it

Library software and mobile app developer Capira Technologies this week announced an integration with StackMap, a bookshelf visualization platform that helps guide patrons directly to the location of books and other materials in the library. Using the app, patrons will be able to search for and discover items in a library’s catalog, and with one click, view a detailed map of their library’s floor plan that highlights the shelf location of their selected item. The integration is currently being tested by Hampton Library in Bridgehampton, NY, and is expected to be widely available as a Capira service option for Apple iOS devices by July 1, and for Android devices by July 30.

2014 Library RFID Survey Results / Mick Fortune

2014 Library RFID Survey Results / Mick Fortune | Information Specialist Training | Scoop.it

Last week’s publication of survey results provoked a couple of people to ask me how many UK public libraries are now using self-service kiosks in their libraries.

It’s a difficult question to answer for several reasons. Suppliers don’t publish lists of their clients, not every library responds to the survey, some libraries may still be using other technologies to support self-service (something that began long before RFID appeared),not everyone using RFID is in fact using it to provide self-service and even those that are have not deployed it across the whole authority.

That said however I have been collecting data about RFID use in UK libraries since 2009 so I think I have a pretty good idea of how widespread is its adoption and thought it might be helpful to publish the list of all the authorities that have replied to the survey over the past five years. It should not be viewed as a comprehensive listing since it is possible that some may subsequently have abandoned the technology  (although I have never heard of this happening). I will in time produce similar listings for non-UK, non-public libraries if there is any demand.

Wearable Learning : the next big thing! / Jane Hart

Wearable Learning : the next big thing! / Jane Hart | Information Specialist Training | Scoop.it

I've been quietly monitoring the emergence of wearable technologies for the last few years. However, since most of the wearable devices (Google Glass, smart watches, jewellery, etc) have only been available in the US, I’ve not been able to get my hands on them, but things have now changed, as the Google Glass Explorer Program has now come to the UK. So it’s time for me to break cover and declare my interest, involvement and excitement in this new Wearable Era.

4 Free and Easy Ways to Display a Live Tweet Wall - OEDB.org

4 Free and Easy Ways to Display a Live Tweet Wall - OEDB.org | Information Specialist Training | Scoop.it

Ellyssa Kroski — June 24, 2014: "In February I organized a pecha kucha style panel discussing topics related to law librarianship in the digital age and I ran a live competition looking for who could tweet the most about the panel. The prize was a copy of the book Law Librarianship in the Digital Age which was appropriate as the panel of speakers was made up of many of the contributing authors. It turned out to be a great way to get people excited and engaged with the speakers and it worked really well, resulting in many people tweeting about our discussion. Therefore, I wanted a way to display the live tweets as they were coming in to keep everyone excited about the contest. But I had a very hard time finding a good, free application which would enable me to project the display I wanted. Since then I’ve found four tools that will easily allow you to display a live tweet wall as the tweets come in, whether it’s for an event you’re hosting, for your library’s flat screen TV display, or simply for following a topic."
