Leadership: If you want more – give more

Leadership: If you want more – give more | Information Powerhouses | Scoop.it

How can leadership be about giving more to get more?  Early in my career I had two questions about this when my mentors shared this philosophy with me.

Leaders, if you want more  - give more.  It’s just like Bob Burg said in his book, The Go-Giver,“Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.”

Dr. Laura Sheneman's insight:

This article rings true to me.  Build others up to take your place and in truth, you have built yourself up more as a leader.  Zig Ziglar says, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want”

Garth Sanginiti's curator insight, December 30, 2013 1:36 PM

The difference between selfless and selfish is a couple of letters...yet the difference between a selfless and selfish person is worlds apart.  "Then I heard the great Zig Ziglar say, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want” "

Redefining the Writing Process with iPads

Redefining the Writing Process with iPads | Information Powerhouses | Scoop.it

With iPads, once we begin thinking beyond the confines of a page, anything is possible. Consider the video below created several years ago by two of my students. First they wrote plot summaries. Then they wrote character sketches. From there, they crafted paragraphs about theme, tying the visual and auditory elements of their videos back to the books. Finally, they created storyboards and bibliographies before producing and publishing their final product.

Via Nik Peachey, Ann Vega
Dr. Laura Sheneman's insight:

Worth taking a look at.  How many times have you heard people ask what their students can "do" on the ipad to submit their work.  This will walk you through using the ipad for writing.

Webinar: Purposeful eBooks

Dr. Laura Sheneman's insight:
Just what is the purpose of eBooks in education?  Are they mainly for research and information?  Is the demand bigger for eBooks that are fiction and use for recreational reading? Or, does the truth lie somewhere in the middle. We’ll be searching out the answer because it is important to know what is needed so that purchasing decisions are purposeful. Sponsored by Rourke Educational Media

Great information for school library professionals that are interested in better ways to make "data-driven decisions."  I love how the author talks about the pro-active data collection rather than the reactive which most of us (including me) rely upon. The article also talks about a webinar that explains these concepts - might be worth registering!

I've sat through many librarian interviews lead by principals.  A standard question I always hear is "How will you promote reading?"   Sometimes the answers I hear surprise me.  A.R. is something I've heard frequently.  I challenge you to imagine a world without A.R. What would you do then?  I would recommend studying this webpage for ideas.

ASPEL Editor's curator insight, January 14, 2014 5:01 AM

Often times we are faced with the temptation to reach for a fast (and potentially wrongheaded) solution. However, a good strategic leader holds steady, synthesizing information from many sources before developing a viewpoint. If your leader lacks some level of peripheral vision, it can leave your company vulnerable to rivals who detect and act on ambiguous signals. We need strategic leaders who will foster open dialogue, build trust and engage key stakeholders, especially when views diverge. Find out how to become the strategic leader your company needs!
