There are exciting possibilities here for any level book club. With a first and foremost love for the written word, we need to be coming together virtually to have book discussions on a regular basis.

Read Where You Are

Read Where You Are | Information Powerhouses | Scoop.it
On July 29, use #readwhereyouare on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and invite others to be a part of this day of action. Share your reading photos!
Dr. Laura Sheneman's insight:

Dear Colleagues,

On July 29th, the White House and the U.S. Department of Education are launching a Read Where You Are day of action to draw attention and awareness to the importance of reading over the summer, especially in these remaining days and weeks of summer before students head back to school.

With only a short time left before getting back to school, there is a very simple way to make a big difference and help more students stay sharp, focused and ready to succeed in the new school year: Read Where You Are.

Website: www.ed.gov/readwhereyouare

Hashtag: #ReadWhereYouAre

Hashtag in Spanish: # leedondeestés

Easy Ways to Join this Day of Action: On Wednesday, July 29th, you can make a big difference – take a moment to Read Where You Are and ask others to spread the word. Here’s how:

1.     Spread the word: Tweet, retweet, post, snap, ‘gram and chat. Use social media and share widely! Make sure to use #ReadWhereYouAre and visit ed.gov/readwhereyouare to learn more. Everyone can be a part of this day of action.2.     Read Where You Are: Read to the young people in your life and in your community. Take a picture and share it through social media using the #ReadWhereYouAre hashtag.3.     Learn More, Read More: visit ed.gov/readwhereyouare to learn more about other ways to keep reading and learning throughout the summer.

Sincerely,

White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics

Estimados Colegas,

Sitio Web: www.ed.gov/readwhereyouare

Teachers as Learners: 6 Great Professional Development Ideas | Edudemic

Teachers as Learners: 6 Great Professional Development Ideas | Edudemic | Information Powerhouses | Scoop.it
Most teachers consider themselves life-long learners. As professionals, teachers are required to complete a certain amount of professional development (PD) every few years to keep their certification current. Usually this PD looks like speakers coming to teacher’s meetings, or educators attending conferences or taking courses at a local college. While these opportunities are ways to advance their craft, many teachers find that they don’t get much as they should from sitting in meetings or classes.

Texas teachers.  This is a great resource for those of you piloting T-TESS, the new Texas teacher appraisal system.  You will have a form similar to the Teacher Self Report.  You will be setting goals and setting up plans for your professional development.  This list may give you ideas to include in planning your self improvement as a teacher.

How Minecraft and Duct Tape Wallets Prepare Our Kids for Jobs That Don’t Exist Yet (EdSurge News)

How Minecraft and Duct Tape Wallets Prepare Our Kids for Jobs That Don’t Exist Yet (EdSurge News) | Information Powerhouses | Scoop.it

Whether it’s Minecraft or duct tape wallets, the childhood passions that seem like fads, if not totally unproductive, can alternatively be seen as mediums for experiencing the virtuous cycle of curiosity: discovering, trying, failing and growing. At DIY, we’ve created a way for kids to explore hundreds of skills and to understand the ways in which they can be creative through them. Often, the skills are unconventional, and almost always the results are surprising. I don’t think it’s important that kids use the skills they learn on DIY for the rest of their lives. What’s important is that kids develop the muscle to be fearless learners so that they are never stuck with the skills they have. Only this will prepare them for a world where change is accelerating and depending on a single skill to provide a lifetime career is becoming impossible.
