CFOs Take Back Seat in Big Data Drive

CFOs Take Back Seat in Big Data Drive | Information Management & Big Data uses cases | Scoop.it

A growing number of companies are sifting through huge piles of data in search of insights.

But relatively few business and IT executives say they have their chief financial officers to thank for it.

Via Luca Naso, Arent van 't Spijker
Jean-Michel Franco's insight:

As thare are a lot of CIO that report to the CFO, this can explain the debates that we currently hear the relationship between CMO and CIO.

Marketing is leading the Big Data efforts in most companies, and CIO need to take the driver seat too in this context

Among the more than 900 executives surveyed:

1) 15% said the chief information officer was their company’s biggest champion of Big Data,

2) followed closely by the chief executive, at 14%.

3) The CFO was cited as the main advocate by just 8% of the respondents.

And yet 70% of companies using Big Data say it primarily helps them with generating revenue (compared with the 30% who use it to control costs).

Where are the CFOs?

GE CDO: Use Data to Deliver Better Customer Outcomes

GE CDO: Use Data to Deliver Better Customer Outcomes | Information Management & Big Data uses cases | Scoop.it

"In our data-driven culture, organizations run the risk of collecting data for data's sake. Ganesh Bell, Chief Digital Officer and GM of Commercial Software & Analytics at General Electric (GE), says companies need to go from being data obsessed t...

Jean-Michel Franco's insight:

Must read! some good takeaways :

"Bell defines digitalization as transforming industries and businesses through the use of software. Creating value and revenue from digital assets requires a revamping of the business itself focused on new business models, new revenue streams, creating a new addressable market and providing new customer outcomes."

" Bell is creating the types of roles where people look at data as a strategic asset across all the different use cases. Since data will always be a chaos that someone has to manage [...] and within the business there are people who own the data for the various businesses. "

Talend promotes a new developer's sandbox for Big Data programmers while SnapLogic releases new Elastic Integration Platform.
Jean-Michel Franco's insight:

Good article from Loraine Lawson. It should be noted that Talend creates an abstraction layer on top of Hadoop, so developer don't have to know the details on how to code directly in Hadoop. But, still, it generates native Hadoop code, rather that proprietary code on top of Hadoop

Car insurance companies want to track your every move—and you’re going to let them

Car insurance companies want to track your every move—and you’re going to let them | Information Management & Big Data uses cases | Scoop.it
The proposition is simple: Install a device in your car and allow your insurance company to monitor your driving—how fast you drive, how hard you brake, how sharply you corner, and so on. In exchange, it will give you a discount on your premiums. That might sound alarming, but it shouldn't be surprising. Considering internet users already happily trade data on every online...

How the 'Internet of Things' Is Transforming the Meaning of Product

How the 'Internet of Things' Is Transforming the Meaning of Product | Information Management & Big Data uses cases | Scoop.it
This week, I attended the PTC Global Live conference. I learned that the transformation of the word “product” continues to accelerate as the already fast-paced evolution of product development technology has been put on steroids by the Internet of Things (IoT). The result is that almost every manufacturer has had to rethink what they are making and selling. Now product can mean a device, a service such as Dropbox powered by software or other technology, a service provided by people, a flow of data, a software application for monitoring, automation, or analysis, or in many cases all of the above.

Why Google Capital Placed Its Hadoop Bet On MapR

Why Google Capital Placed Its Hadoop Bet On MapR | Information Management & Big Data uses cases | Scoop.it

istros Now that MapR has received a load of cash from Google Capital, it is time to ask: What does this latest round of Hadoop funding mean? All three of the major players have gotten large amounts of money from well-known investors. What can we infer from looking at who funded whom?
To my thinking, Google Capital’s investment means that the start of the race is over. There are three major players, MapR, Cloudera, and Hortonworks, with Pivotal, WANDISCO, Syncsort and dozens of others selling superchargers and enhancements. But the main event will be between the major players, each of which has a different strategy.
