iPad Research in Schools - Use and Impact of the iPad

iPad Research in Schools - Use and Impact of the iPad | Information Literacy in schools | Scoop.it

An in-depth study that took place in Scotland, looking at "issues associated with the deployment of personal mobile devices as tools for teaching and learning."
Four themes were identified:

* How tablet devices impacted teaching and learning?

* Leadership and management issues

* Parental engagement

* Professional development and learning for teachers

The post lists six headlines from the study, including (quoting):

* The adoption of mobile technologies on a personal basis significantly increases access to technology for students, both inside and beyond school, with many attendant benefits for learning which include greater motivation, engagement, parental involvement, and understanding of complex ideas.

 * Teachers are equally engaged by the use of a device like the iPad which has a low learning curve enabling them to use it immediately as a teaching tool and a learning tool for themselves.

How Teens Do Research in the Digital World | Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project

How Teens Do Research in the Digital World | Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project | Information Literacy in schools | Scoop.it

Pew Research has just published a study that looks at how teens do research in the digital world. They survey was done "in collaboration with the College Board and the National Writing Project." Below are a couple of the key findings (quoted).

* Virtually all (99%) AP and NWP teachers in this study agree with the notion that 'the internet enables students to access a wider range of resources than would otherwise be available,' and 65% agree that 'the internet makse today's students more self-sufficient.'

* Fewer teachers, but still a majority of this sample (60%), agree with the assertion that today's technologies make it harder for students to find credible sources of information.

Nothing new here in the way our students research.  More reason to train our students to take ownership for evaluating what they retrieve on the net.

''The '.org' websites are the ones that trick them most. Years ago we were taught that these were just organisations putting out information but if you look now lots of them show a particularly strong bias.''
