The Importance Of Mobile Learning In (And Out Of) The Classroom

The Importance Of Mobile Learning In (And Out Of) The Classroom | Information for Librarians | Scoop.it
There has always been at least some sort of disconnect between how things like mobile learning are taught in a classroom and how things work in the 'real world'.

Via Susan Grigsby
Susan Grigsby's curator insight, April 19, 3:11 PM

From the article: The 21st Century workforce will be filled with people who have grown up with devices, and are used to having easy access to search engines, sharing and collaboration are the norm, and creative freedom is king. Shouldn’t our classrooms represent a version of this too?

Absolutely! What's the hold-up? IMHO it isn't just funding. There's a fundamental disconnect between the generation teaching and the generation being taught - how do we narrow the gap?

Sandra Carswell's comment, April 20, 11:41 AM
We narrow the gap by bringing the teachers up to speed. How? By providing a device and training and requiring them to participate. After all, to continue to be a great teacher, you must continue to be a learner, it goes hand-in-hand.
Susan Grigsby's comment, April 22, 12:16 PM
Agreed. Becoming a teacher does NOT mean abdicating the responsibility to continue to be a learner - sometimes from our own students!

Plagiarism and the link: How the web makes attribution easier -- and more complicated

Plagiarism and the link: How the web makes attribution easier -- and more complicated | Information for Librarians | Scoop.it
The controversy over writer Nate Thayer’s failure to credit his sources, which some alleged amounted to plagiarism, is just part of an ongoing debate over how we use — and give credit for — information in a digital age.

The problem is that while adding hyperlinks is a great way of avoiding a charge of plagiarism — something that might have helped Fox News opinion writer Juan Williams and other alleged plagiarists — there is no accepted protocol for how or where to add those links, or how much content someone can cut and paste into their story or blog post without crossing the line from borrowing into plagiarism or copyright infringement.

Via Dennis T OConnor
Sandra Carswell's insight:

This is also an important topic for librarians to address. We teach our students to cite sources and give attribution to the creators of materials they use in their projects. Is a link enough? And yes, just how much can you quote without losing your own voice?

Reuven Werber's curator insight, April 11, 1:29 AM

Is a link enough for attribution?

Paige Jaeger 's comment, April 11, 8:31 AM
As a hyperlink embedder, this is a timely post for introspection! Everyone should stop, read, and contemplate whether they are remaining true to the source. I'd like to think I have been, but it's time to reflect and inspect!
Paige Jaeger 's curator insight, April 11, 8:34 AM

As a hyperlink embedder, I would like to think I have remained true to the source author, but this post is a great timely piece to insure we contemplate, and reflect on how we are attributing the work of others.  In our hurried-fast-pace-production world, we need to slow down and insure that we are practicing what we preach.
