:: Growing Gap Between What Business Needs and What Education Provides :: | Information Economy | Scoop.it
There are all sorts of reasons to get an education. It gives you perspective on the world, it makes you a complete person, and of course most importantly of all, it helps you build a career.

===> 3. Educational institutions around the world are not keeping up with teaching styles and general skill needs of the 21st century workforce. This is a very complex problem to fix, but at least the issues are on the table. Educationproviders and leaders have to visit corporate recruiters and learn about the needs of business. <===

3. Educational institutions around the world are not keeping up with teaching styles and general skill needs of the 21st century workforce. This is a very complex problem to fix, but at least the issues are on the table. Educationproviders and leaders have to visit corporate recruiters and learn about the needs of business.

Allan Shaw's curator insight, February 17, 12:38 AM

Perhaps our time, the here and now is redolent of times gone past where education had to face significant public criticism and attempt significant adjustments. The early 20th sentury in the USA was such a time.  Educators need to lead from a firm values base and in line with what is best for students.

Lou Salza's curator insight, February 18, 7:01 PM

1. The paradox of high unemployment and a war for talent continues.

We don’t have a jobs crisis in the world, we have a skills crisis. Some clear evidence from this report.

45% of US employers say lack of skills is the “main reason” for entry-level vacanciesOnly 42% of worldwide employers believe new graduates are adequately prepared for work.

This data echoes the data we hear regularly from clients. Companies need to invest heavily in internal development programs to stay competitive. Our research shows that the training industry grew by 12% this year, the highest level in 9 years.

This research also shows that employers would be willing to pay new workers 22% higher salaries if they did have the skills they need. Employers want “ready made” employees.

2. Worldwide educational institutions are out of sync with employer needs.

While 42% of employers believe newly educated workers are ready for work, 72% of educational institutions do. This is an enormous mis-match. Primary and secondary educational institutions are not keeping in touch with corporate recruiters and the needs of business.

Again our research validates this completely. Most of our clients are investing heavily in new corporate universities, onboarding programs, and what we call “continuous learning” programs. In fact the L&D industry is in the middle of a renaissance, as companies try to reinvent all types of training around new internet technologies.

3. Students don’t perceive that traditional education methods drive job skills.

The #1 cited way (60%) students believe they learn skills is through “on the job training.” (Our reserach shows that 72% of business managers say the same thing.) 58% cite that “hands-on learning” is best.

Lectures are the lowest rated learning method (30%) tied with “traditional online learning” (30%).

Unfortunately most colleges still rely heavily on lectures and the “for-profit” distance learning institutions rely heavily on “traditional online learning.” (Only 24% of academic program graduates say that they use hands-on learning in their program.)

Create Great Image Compositions and Photo Montages with Fotor

Create Great Image Compositions and Photo Montages with Fotor | Information Economy | Scoop.it

Robin Good's curator insight, June 13, 1:35 PM

Fotor is a great web-based image editor that is particularly talented at creating photo-montages, image strips and boards, photo cards and other similar image compositions.

The beauty of it is that Fotor connects directly to your Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, Instagram photo accounts, giving you the opportunity to easily find, drag and position your ideal images on the canvas. You can also upload images from your computer and easily crop, rotate or resize it.

Fotor also allows to overlay and position any text messages on your final composition allowin you to create those effective "social flags" for your online fans.

Fotor saves in JPG or PNG format and can post or upload directly your compositions to anyone of your connected social media accounts.

My comment: Excellent image editor for creating image compositions and photo montages. Lots of features and options. Easy to use.

Curate Your Online Visual Portfolio with Dunked | Information Economy | Scoop.it

"Dunked makes creating your online & mobile portfolio website super simple. Showcase your design, illustration, video and photography work on any device."

Via Robin Good
Robin Good's curator insight, June 11, 3:17 AM

If you are looking for a free tool that allows you to easily create a visual portfolio of images and/or video clips, organized into categories, Dunked offers an excellent solution.

Simple, elegant and very straightforward to use, Dunked makes it easy to upload one or more pictures at a time and to arrange them on your portfolio page and into separate collections called Projects.

You can customize background, colors for all the elements on a page, fonts, logo and you can add a personalized About and Contact page.

My comments: Excellent visual portoflio tool for photographers, designers and artists of any kind. Compared to having an image or video collection on Pinterest, the difference is that the presentation style is much more elegant, and images are viewed by default at a much larger size. You also have fine control on individual text style, colors and other design elements. The absence of a bookmarklet further indicates that this tool has been designed with the photographer/artist/painter in mind and not to collect stuff found on the web.

Free to use.

The Free Online Image Editor for All Levels: Open Pixlr

The Free Online Image Editor for All Levels: Open Pixlr | Information Economy | Scoop.it

Via Robin Good
Robin Good's curator insight, June 8, 5:29 AM

If I were to recommend an online image/photo editor, that is fast, flexible and that provides all of the tools and features I generally need, I wouldn't hesitate a second in recommending Pixlr.

Not only this free web-based image editor is zippy and responsive as it can get, but it offers three alternative "versions" depending on your needs and skill level.

1) The Open Pixlr Express is the one I use the most, as it offers all of the basic functionalities I generally need, such as cropping, resizing, converting and basic retouching.

2) The Open Pixlr Editor is the advanced version which integrates all of the photo retouching tools you may need, as well as image layers, filters and more.

3) For non-technical people, kids and novices the Open Pixlr-o-Matic offers a perfect solution by integrating all of the key basic functions in an attractive and much simplified interface.

There is also a free mobile version both for Android and one for iPhone/iPad.

Free to use. No regsitration required.

(From the article): I'd like the sense that someone of taste and discretion and experience has already whittled down the choices. (That's the problem with search engines, by the way - no taste!) The world needs editing - and yes, I use that word advisedly. Give me the cheeses that matter, offer me a wine list that's manageable. And put all the information that's raining down on us from cyberspace in a convenient, easy-to-handle form. Sorry, I never intended to be a defence of newspapers!

New SEO: The N.1 Thing Is To Create Unique, Useful, Memorable Content

New SEO: The N.1 Thing Is To Create Unique, Useful, Memorable Content | Information Economy | Scoop.it
Robin Good's curator insight, June 17, 3:56 PM

My personal belief is this: in the near future, if you want to stand out in your niche, get a serious following of passionate fans and build a strong credibility for yourself, you will need to do something better than just writing blog posts (however good they may be).

"Recently Martin Laetsch, Act-On’s Director of Online Marketing, presented a webinar covering the 10 most important rules for successful search engine optimization. Not all of them are 100% new, but they’re all critical keys to success. ...You can catch up with the whole on-demand session here."

In this article the focus is specifically on rule n.1: Create content with your audience in mind.

Rekha Mohan writes: "The main point to all this is: create content people want to share. People like sharing interesting information; it builds credibility, creating the image that the sharer is in the know, and consistently sharing good information increases your audience.

Good information also helps visitors and increases your authority on a subject – use white papers, case studies, fun facts, educational material, research results, thought-provoking blog posts, how-to articles, top 10 lists, and more to share your information in innovative and easy-to-read ways."

Very good reminders for anyone having doubts about what's best to do in the near future, to gain extra visibility and reputation, on any content web site.

Rightful. 7/10

Paola Caballer's curator insight, June 17, 5:41 PM
