How can content curation in a niche information area be monetized? Ask Joe Wilkert.


He writes: "There’s too much content out there anyway and I certainly don’t need access to even more of it. What I really need is more curation and less volume.


I want someone else to read it all and then tell me what I absolutely need to read.


They act as a filter and I pay them because they save me time and make me smarter."


The article points to the added value that traditional content publishers can offer their readers by opening the gates to community curators, who, by doing what they like the most, can bring back lots of more subscribers and attention to their brands.


"...There are sports experts, business experts, local community experts, etc. These curators are reading everything you’re publishing and picking the best of the best... They in turn publish their lists to a whole new set of subscribers; these readers pay for access to only the content recommended by the curator, not the full editions.


The best curators float to the top and drive more subscriptions than the others and you pay them a commission for each subscriber they bring in. Curators establish brand names for themselves, as in, “hey, if you’re into travel you need to subscribe to Bob Thomas…he finds all the best travel articles so I don’t have to.


But there's more, as Mr Wilker points out. The opportunities don't end there.

Robin Good: Facebook has introduced a new curation feature designed to allow its users to collect and organize their favorite "products" into so-called "Collections".

 

According to Hubspot "the new feature called 'Collections,' allows marketers to add “Want” or “Collect” buttons to news feed posts about products."

The new FB "Collections" is publicly available to everyone, and it is being tested "with 7 retail partners -- Pottery Barn, Wayfair, Victoria’s Secret, Michael Kors, Neiman Marcus, Smith Optics, and Fab.com."

(you need to go to those FB brad pages to test it).

 

It also seems that the feature can be activated in at least three different ways by one of these three upcoming action buttons:

 

a) "Want": adds the product to a Timeline section of a user's profile called “Wishlist”

 

b) "Collect": adds the item to a Collection called “Products”

 

c) "Like": a special version of the standard "Like" button that also adds the item to “Products”

 

N.B.: While Collections are free for business pages to use, they're only visible to the page's fans. You have to "Like" the page in order to see these types of posts.

Robin Good: "Would you like to join a select group of designers from around the world to curate what you would consider fonts from our Monotype collection for use in editorial publishing?"

 

This is what James Fooks-Bale, from Monotype (the largest type foundry out there) initially wrote to Mario Garcia. The email went out also to several other designers around the world, who were all invited to participate in curating a set of type collections to inspire and help designers re-discover what fonts and typefaces to use for their next project.

 

"The unique challenge of this project was developing type palettes.

 

Each set of type families had to make sense for the hypothetical publications we proposed.

 

But the families in each palette also had to complement each other: in finish, attitude, or historical reference.

 

It was not about selecting interesting typefaces, but choosing those that could work as part of a system..."

 

Monotype calls these curated sets of typographic faces "collections" and it describes their function and meaning as: "The Monotype Collections are a series of personal font selections curated from the Monotype library by leading figures in the print and digital design worlds.

 

Each one takes a theme that corresponds to real-life briefs or trends, such as Heritage, Publishing, Branding or Web Fonts, and all fonts selected by our curators are available to license from Monotype.

The sheer volume of font options now available to designers and creative directors can be daunting and time-consuming to explore, leading designers to settle for tried-and-trusted go-to fonts.

 

The purpose of the collections is to widen their palette, and offer a range of entry points to the Monotype library, which contains thousands of fonts covering every application, and has its origins in the late 19th century.

 

The Collections contrast contemporary alternatives and reveal hidden gems from the archives, and invite designers to delve deeper."

 

This is a great example of how curation can be used to market, inspire and help great artists discover and re-discover tools they may have not been using for a while.

He has some interesting things to say about an article he read by Ville Kilkku, which was all about the future of content curation, the title of the piece he's referring to in this post is "Klout, Triberr, paper.li, and the future of content curation".

 

Intro

 

He says,


"Reading this article made me realize that people curation should be a lot of what we are really talking about here. But before I get to that, let me step through what he talks about. He takes us through a few different models of content curation. I’m going to need to compare these to my post on Marketing via Aggregation, Filtering and Curation – Tools and Resources to see if this classification changes things."

 

He then talks about three major trends in content curation:

 

From individual content curators to crowdsourced content curation: Individuals cannot keep up with the pace of new content, even though they have better discovery tools than before. Crowdsourcing can, although it is not suitable for promoting radical new ideas: the dictatorship of the masses is unavoidably conservative.

 

From manual to semi-automated content curation: Individual content curators are forced to automate as much of the process as possible in order to stay relevant. From content curation to people curation: When there is too much content, you vet the content creators, manually or automatically. Those who pass get exposure for all of their content.

 

What caught my attention:

 

How do these trends interact? Social networking of the content creator is vitally important in order to create an audience as isolated content becomes increasingly difficult to discover and curation focuses on people instead of individual content. Build it, and they will come, is dead.

Bento is a website that, thanks to its author Jon Chan and the many user contributions, has gathered, organized and curated the very best resources available online where you can learn how to code.


From html to javascript, ruby, php, Java, perl, Bento offers learning guidance for over 80 different technologies and coding languages. 


Here is how Jon Chan, a 23 years old who launched this project in September of 2013, describes Bento: 

"Bento is what I would have liked to have when I was learning to code.


I started learning to code when I was very young - about ten years old. Then, the only things I had available were what I could find online and through a few dense books.


Now, people have the exact opposite problem: how do you break through the noise and find what's actually valuable to learn?


This site is here to help you figure that out."

 

Bento is a perfect example of effective content curation as it does not simply collect and list all of the resources available to learn each language but it only suggests the very best ones, organizing them in easy, medium and hard and providing also "best of" / direct solutions that save readers lots of valuable time.
