Established 25 years ago as a centre for identifying and promoting outsider art, “Art en Marge” is now a museum. The artworks reflect the centre’s philosophy of promoting artists who remain in the shadows: mad or mentally disabled artists, and outsider artists with no means to access the professional art world. Some are staying in homes for mentally disabled people, in psychiatric hospitals; others practise or have practised various crafts: photographer, junk dealers, cobbler, musician...

OutsiderArt

OutsiderArt | Outsider Art & More | Scoop.it

The Collection of the Moscow Museum of Outsider Art was founded - albeit unwittingly - in 1989. At the time, perestroika had focused public attention on both new ideas in art and on the plight of the handicapped and mentally ill in Soviet Society. In 1990, the first exhibit of art by Russian mental patients opened in Moscow. It was hugely successful and traveled to several European capitals. During these travels, the Russian organizers of this exhibit were fascinated with the Western genre of Art Brut, or Outsider Art. This movement had been developing vigorously in the West, but was entirely unknown in the former Soviet Union.

Upon their return to Moscow, the organizers broadened their objectives and started actively collecting Russian works of Outsider Art. Over the past ten years, the collection has been exhibited throughout the former Soviet Union, as well as in Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Hungary, Bulgaria, South Africa, Peru and the United States.

The first ever Russian Museum of Outsider Art opened in 1996. Since then, the collection has grown to several hundred pieces and, in 2000, moved to new permanent premises in the Izmailovsky region of Moscow. Today, the Moscow Museum of Outsider Art remains a museum dedicated exclusively to collecting and exhibiting Outsider Art in Russia.

Museum Gugging

Museum Gugging | Outsider Art & More | Scoop.it

Conceived of as an exhibition site for the art form Art Brut, museum gugging displays the works of the Gugging artists at their place of origin and at the same time functions as a forum for international Art Brut as well as contemporary art in general. French painter Jean Dubuffet, who coined the term Art Brut, meant by it “sopisticated, raw, original art“ of a highly personal and unadapted form of expression. Uninhibited by trends in established art, Art Brut is created by artists without any background in academics or art theory.

The Museum‘s standing exhibition displays master pieces from the Private Foundation - Gugging Arists on an area of 840 sq yd. The exhibitions about the art from Gugging, from 1960 to the present, include important works and offer a comprehensive overview of the history and presence or artistic activity in Gugging. The second half of the Museum is a venue for changing exhibitions. Works by international Art Brut artists are prevalent here nex to art from Gugging. Furthermore, other artistic positions enter into dialogue with Art Brut.
