Although the May jobs report showed a shockingly low number of jobs added, it is the inflation rate that is keeping the Fed from rising interest rates, Janet Yellen, chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, said Monday at the Philadelphia World Affairs Council.

Whereas the jobs report on Friday was disappointing, the overall labor market situation has been positive, Yellen said. The economy added 2.7 million jobs last year, an average of 230,000 a month.

Census Bureau data released this week recorded the biggest median house size for a new single-family home on record--2,467 square feet. Whereas the unemployment rate declined by 0.3% to 4.7% to 7.4 million in May, nonfarm payroll employment changed very little with an increase of 38,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This number is much lower than the anticipated 160,000. Although there was speculation that the Verizon strike would decrease that number because it was not factored in, that would have dropped the estimates to 120,000, still much higher than the actual increase.
