Using the Hubble Space Telescope's ultraviolet sensing equipment, researchers were able to capture a Jovian aurora bigger than the size of the Earth. The image, seen here, was released by the European Space Agency (ESA) today and is actually a composite of two shots. The first is an optical shot taken by Hubble in spring 2014 and the second comes from its ultraviolet sensors and was taken this year.

The Pending Home Sales Index,* a forward-looking indicator based on contract signings, slid 3.7 percent to 110.8 in May from a downwardly revised 115.0 in April and is now slightly lower (0.2 percent) than May 2015 (111.0). With last month’s decline, the index reading is still the third highest in the past year, but declined year-over-year for the first time since August 2014.

The U.S. Supreme Court announced Tuesday that it will hear arguments during its next term on whether the city of Miami can sue Bank of America and Wells Fargo for alleged predatory lending.

According to Reuters and ScotusBlog, the Supreme Court granted a writ of certiorari to the banks, meaning it will consider the city’s lawsuits against Bank of America and Wells Fargo during its next term, which begins in October and ends in June 2017.

Ohio passed legislation yesterday that seeks to prevent zombie homes, or vacant or abandoned residential property, by enacting a fast-track process for mortgage foreclosures.

“Ohio has now put itself ahead of the national curve in fighting community blight,” said Robert Klein, founder and chairman of Cleveland-based Community Blight Solutions, which has worked with legislators for three years to enact a fast-track foreclosure process.

Home prices continue to increase nationwide, even hitting new highs in several large housing markets in April, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices Case-Shiller Home Prices Indices released today.  

Home prices increased 5% in April, down from an increase of 5.1% the month before. The 10-city composite increased by 4.7%, a decrease from March’s 4.8% gain and the 20-city composite increased by 5.4%, down from an increase of 5.5% the month before.

n its equity report for the first quarter of 2016, CoreLogic said that 92 percent of mortgaged homes in the United States—46.7 million—were worth more than the amount left on the loan. A total of 268,000 properties that had negative equity during the first quarter of 2015 had regained equity at the beginning of this year.
