Having visited Belgium it’s easy to return weighed down, usually by chocolate and beer, but Stephen Holmes returned from Materialise World 2012 heavy in thought following an interview with the company’s CEO Wilfried Vancraen Materialise World is a bi-annual event taking place in Materialise’s hometown of Leuven that covers not only what can already be achieved using 3D printing tools, but what additive manufacturing can provide in the very near future.

I never heard of Peter and Alison Smithson and their Upper Lawn Pavilion that they designed for themselves as a weekend house. Loving brutalist architecture, I have to thank Lasse Rode form studio xoio for doing such a remarkable 3d recreation of this house.

Fast and Easy 3D Capture Create 3D models of spaces and objects in minutes
So, we sort of can't get over the fact that all these futuristic ideas keep coming true, and are actually accessible to regular folks. Whether it's a gray hair pill in testing, a blue light that zaps zits, or a digital camera that captures 360 degrees, it's no joke that the future is now. Today, this amazingness rings true in the form of 3D printing.
VRayPattern is a 3DS Max plugin made by iCube, publishers of the well-received MultiScatter and VRayScatter plugins. At first glance VRayPattern appears to be another entry into the burgeoning proxy scattering market, already well served by the aforementioned and competitors such as Carbon Scatter, Forest Pack Pro and ScatterFX.
The Mill is a conceptual design project, done by Vancouver based 3D Artist Chris Kowal, to showcase MP Lighting‘s LED lights. Chris started his WIP thread about this project on the forums back in July 2011 and kept updating us about his progress. Yesterday the work was finally published in the form of an interactive website, best viewed on a tablet device and designed with the sales team of MP Lighting in mind offering them a portable tool to help their clients visualize lighting designs. All the work (design, modeling, texturing, lighting and rendering) was done by Chris except the coding of the site.
L'artiste Pascal Blanché lancera fin avril un art book intitulé Derelict Planet, reprenant ses travaux au style si particulier dans le domaine science-fiction et fantasy.
With this release, we tried to do something slightly different. Along with the bigger features, we tackled improving things that might seem small, but can be annoying or cause inefficiencies when you work. For example, we now allow you to move the viewport while creating various entities like arrays so you don’t stop creating, change your viewport, then begin again. Instead, you simply move the viewport while continuing to draw/create. These are old legacy issues, many of you are used to it, but it doesn’t mean it needs to remain that way. We tackled dozens of these workflow improvements and you’ll encounter them all over the product. This is one outcome of our 3dsmaxfeedback.autodesk.com effort from a year ago.

Release of Cheetah3D 6.0
Today sees the release of Cheetah 6.0. The biggest change in v6.0 is, without a doubt, the smooth integration of the industry-proven Bullet physics engine for the simulation of rigid-body and soft-body dynamics. No matter if you want to spill a bowl of marbles onto the floor or to simulate a waving flag in the wind: Cheetah3D 6.0 can handle it with just a few mouse clicks. In addition to the new dynamics features, Cheetah3D 6.0 adds support for Isosurfaces (Metaballs), the keying of mesh vertices and spline control points, improved iBooks Author compatibility, an upgraded FBX SDK, support for 16-bit textures and much, much more.
As promised, I wanted to follow up on my Eames series with a few pointers about the materials created for the chairs. This is the first in a series of mini how-to tuts about materials. The Eames chairs are a good place to start. They all use materials that are meant to show some age, a certain vintage quality and patina, yet are as simple as materials can get. They are a good way to demonstrate how materials can be made to look realistic without necessarily using complex, multi-layered setups that would take a long time to render. I will explore more complex materials later on (indeed, I’m planning a post just about multi-layered mats), but, for the sake of economy, I only use them in my work to achieve effects that cannot be obtained with single-layer mats.

If you prefer the freedom of painting your lighting in Photoshop, this tutorial teaches you a fast way to set up masks in Photoshop from renders with red, green, blue and black, without the slow tedious work of tracing them by eye with the Paint Brush or Lasso tool. The masks used in this tutorial are two different renders using the Red, Green and Blue channel. One render separates the faces facing different directions, the other separates different objects. Samuli Lautjarvi is a 24-year-old digital painter from Finland. He has been working in a mobile game company for half a year and doing minor freelance gigs (CD covers and game graphics). His biggest enthusiasm is painting environment concepts, for some of which he uses Sketchup models as a basis. For 3D modeling and rendering, I used SketchUp and Kerkythea (both free) and then Photoshop for the 2D part of the process. I won’t go into detail about how to model in Sketchup, if you’re new to the program, there are many good tutorials here to get you started. I have also included the model with Scenes for download here if you want to just practice the rendering and Photoshop work.

Digital Domain est à nouveau sous le feu des critiques, suite à des propos tenus par son CEO John Textor. Faire payer les élèves pour qu'ils puissent travailler gratuitement : exploitation ou opportunité ?
John Carter may have explored Mars, but for the movie it didn’t begin there. Before anything can actually be made for film, it must start as a concept. This has traditionally been in the form of drawings and paintings, but thanks to advancing technologies and innovative studios, an entirely new form of Concepting is coming forward.
