Children, Teens, and Reading

Children, Teens, and Reading | Tech Tools and the Library | Scoop.it

This research review charts trends in reading rates and reading achievement over time among kids and teens in the U.S. We focus on national surveys and databases for data on children's reading habits and reading scores, looking at differences across time, and between demographic groups. We also examine the growing literature on ereading among young people, which has largely studied attitudes toward ebooks and ereading. We conclude with a discussion of key future areas of research on reading and ereading.

K-12 Teaching in the 21st Century MOOC - Findings

K-12 Teaching in the 21st Century MOOC - Findings | Tech Tools and the Library | Scoop.it

With support from partners around the United States as well as co-facilitators from various institutions and organizations, the MOOC was developed and implemented from a connectivist pedagogy. Participants were encouraged to act as both participants and leaders in a conversation about connected learning, personalization, collaboration, and reflection. The course was unique in the sense that its intended audience included K-12 students interested in teaching, preservice teachers, and inservice teachers. The goal of inviting such an audience was to facilitate a conversation that supported learning through collaborative professional development.

5 Tips for Classroom Management with Mobile Devices

5 Tips for Classroom Management with Mobile Devices | Tech Tools and the Library | Scoop.it

Classroom management is a challenging skill which I consistently strive to improve on a regular basis. Often, people believe that managing a classroom that has employed technology requires a whole new approach and skill set. However, I have found that many traditional methods of classroom management readily translate to the technological rich schoolroom – with some slight modification.

Google Apps, I believe are leading the way to student productivity. As teachers, we may see this as another hurdle in learning new technology, but students will grasp the concepts of Drive, Sharing, Collaborating, and etc, much easier than their teachers. I never thought about using the drawing as a whiteboard tool. Will have to give it a shot. Our district currently doesn't support hangouts, but with iPads we can probably use facetime in much the same way as described.

Common Sense Media has just published an infographic and a report that looks at how children ages 8 and under are using media. They did a similar report two years ago so you will see some major shifts in how current technology is being used.

Areas covered in the infographic include:

* Access to mobile technology

* Tech savvy toddlers

* Screen time

* What kid's are doing with mobile devices

* Television time

* Digital Divide

and more. There continues to be debate over how much screen time is appropriate for young ones. This infographic may provide some information that surprises you. To access the summary or the full report, "Zero to Eight: Children's Media Use in America 2013"

A 4-Step Guide To Effective Lesson Planning - Edudemic

A 4-Step Guide To Effective Lesson Planning - Edudemic | Tech Tools and the Library | Scoop.it
Building lesson plans is an integral part of every teacher’s day. Integrating technology into lessons (that may have previously existed in a totally non-technology infused version) can sometimes be difficult, especially if the task at hand can be easily completed without technology – many of us wonder why bother if we don’t have to. While …

Check out this 4-step guide to creating effective lessons that integrate technology.

Step 1 - What level of learning is being addressed? The infographic looks at Bloom's, but you could use other resources as you design your lesson plan.

Step 2 - What level of technology will be used? SAMR (as in Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition) are shown in the infographic, but there are other ways to look at the level of technology.

Step 3 - How should your classroom look? Four choices are provided.

Step 4 - How will you evaluate your students? Ten ideas are listed. You may find additional ones that you prefer to use.

As an initial framework to consider working with this visual may be a great tool, especially for folks who are still at the beginning phase of integrating technology into lessons.

Slidedocs - spread ideas with effective visual documents | Tech Tools and the Library | Scoop.it

Slidedocs help you spread your smart thinking by combining visual communications with short chunks of written copy. Their scannable nature makes them great pre-read, reference, and leave-behind materials. Their modularity makes it easy for people to incorporate your ideas into their own communications. And these features together make slidedocs the perfect companion to both written documents and presentations.

If you're going to ignore social media in the classroom, then [..] stop pretending that you're helping low-income children overcome the digital divide if you aren't going to teach them how to communicate online.
Social media is here. It's just another resource and doesn't have to be a distraction from learning objectives. Social media is another tool that you can use to make your classroom more engaging, relevant and culturally diverse.
