Show this infographic to students and get them to tell you what their first impression was, then look more closely and identify what message the infographic is giving them. Great intro to showing the basic features of an infographic, plus it shows some great apps to use in education!

Jose Jordan's curator insight, June 28, 2013 1:48 PM

An Infographic About Infographics

An Infographic About Infographics | Infographics and Data Visualization | Scoop.it

A picture is worth a thousand words, and Californian digital marketing agency, Bixa Media, have illustrated (pun intended) by creating an infographic about the importance of… well, infographics.

Based on the company’s research and insights, they found that visual data is absorbed 60,000x faster than text and people will only read about 20% of the text on a page.

Survey Reveals Which Demographics Use What Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]

Survey Reveals Which Demographics Use What Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC] | Infographics and Data Visualization | Scoop.it

A massive survey of internet users reveals trends in social media usage across numerous platforms, ages, races, genders, population density and which social media sites do they frequently visit.

The Pew Research Center has released the results of a comprehensive social media survey, conducted over several years to evaluate which demographics were using social media, and on which platforms. Which social networking sites emerged on top?

Of the online adults surveyed at the end of 2012:

67% use Facebook

20% use LinkedIn

16% use Twitter

15% use Pinterest

13% use Instagram

6% use Tumblr

A decent amount of Americans appear to be using social media, but which demographics use social media in greater numbers?

It appears that women use social media 9% more than men do, at a whopping rate of 71%. Other frontrunners with the highest social network activity in their demographic include city dwellers(70%), Hispanics (72%) and adults with a household income below $30,000 annually (72%).

The most pervasive and consistent divider amongst social media users remains, unsurprisingly, their age. 83% of the young adult demographic (18-29 year olds) use social media, which is well over double the activity of online adults over 65 years old (32%).

An Artist Who Turns Data Into 3-D Displays

An Artist Who Turns Data Into 3-D Displays | Infographics and Data Visualization | Scoop.it

We’re deep in the midst of a data viz heyday. Infographics are ubiquitous, presenting facts and data sets in straightforward ways that are, by design, easy to understand.

Willem Besselink takes a different approach by translating directed sets of information into physical forms. What’s not explicit, however, are the complex stats that inspire each work.

Each new installation is dictated by its own unique guidelines and rules, which themselves are based on a number of dependent variables, including site-specifics, materials, color scheme, and budget. “Setting these up and following them all through the project allows--or forces--me to do what needs to be done,” he says, in part following the lead of “hero” Sol Lewitt’s Sentences on Conceptual Art.

Snail Mail vs Email [infographic]: old school direct lives on...

Snail Mail vs Email [infographic]: old school direct lives on... | Infographics and Data Visualization | Scoop.it

Snail mail – the original form of direct marketing – lives, according to a recent consumer survey, showing that the average Australian receives around seven letters per week, with government departments the most prolific users of the medium for communication purposes.

Read rates were high for most sender categories, much higher than standard email open rates, with special interest clubs and government leading the pack with open rates of 79% and 78% respectively. Read rates were less favourable for correspondence from real estate agents and local restaurants, while supermarket communication proved more likely to be read than department store mail.

For all categories respondents of the nationally representative survey preferred to receive correspondence via snail mail than email, although there were high numbers of people with no preference either way. Snail mail is preferred for lengthier or important information while email is preferred for brief information. As could be expected, older generations are more likely to be receptive to mail than email...

The Visual Signature of Your City

The Visual Signature of Your City | Infographics and Data Visualization | Scoop.it

Social-media platforms like FourSquare and Twitter have been a boon for sociologists and geographers who now have entirely new ways of tracking how we move through cities, where we go, who we are, and even what we think of the world around us. There is one set of social-media platforms, however, that has been tougher to crack for useful data than others: photo-sharing sites.

Their metadata can illustrate where people take photos, and how active they are. But on the whole, how do you aggregate useful data about entire cities and the differences between them from the content of millions of photos on a site like Instagram?

Researchers have been working on this for the past year, and they've just posted some of the initial results from their Phototrails project here. The project is less an exploration of a specific research question, and more a first foray into what we might learn by treating user-generated photography as another source of Big Data.

Music curation is in the future of music and allows producers and artist the oppotunity of touching their fan base. Wtih music curation you as an artist  allow your fans to tell you what they want to hear, this allows the industry to filter out  the one hit wonder who linger s around and makes way for the true talents to do what they love.

Andreas Kuswara's comment, June 11, 2013 9:22 PM
I supposed twitter can be used or any tool can be used for anything, but some tools are made with certain intended affordance by the creator that would make the tool less effective for certain functions. curation in a way is capturing things void of time (i probably drawing too much from museum), while twitter is fast pace timeline of interactive (or one way) discourse.... they seems to be inherently different.

i'm just automatically sceptical when 'one tool can be use for all' theme appear. but it is an interesting suggestion.

Not everyone sees colors the same way, and colors have drastically different meanings in different cultures, but one thing we all have in common: color is important. These visualizations all show us different things about colors.
