China’s internet propaganda is more subtle and sophisticated than it ever has been

China’s internet propaganda is more subtle and sophisticated than it ever has been | Digital Strategy and Influence | Scoop.it
Chinese government propaganda is often pretty heavy-handed. State media insist that economic growth will be L-shaped, for example, but do not bother to say what that means. A string of bizarre English-language music videos demand praise for China’s 13th Five-year Plan, and detail how great Americans find it to work for a Chinese boss.

China’s scary lesson to the world: Censoring the Internet works

China’s scary lesson to the world: Censoring the Internet works | Digital Strategy and Influence | Scoop.it
First there was the Berlin Wall. Now there is the Great Firewall of China, not a physical barrier preventing people from leaving, but a virtual one, preventing information harmful to the Communist Party from entering the country.

Just as one fell, so will the other be eventually dismantled, because information, like people, cannot be held back forever.

Or so the argument goes.

Influence from representations of others’ responses: social priming meets social influence

Highlights

We propose that people represent others’ responses and are then influenced by them.

These processes are generally spontaneous and unintended.

Influence can affect beliefs, attitudes, emotions, and behaviors.

Close others (friends, fellow ingroup members) are more likely to cause influence.

Fighting ISIS on Social Media: Ideas for an Individualized Approach

Fighting ISIS on Social Media: Ideas for an Individualized Approach | Digital Strategy and Influence | Scoop.it
The ascent of the Islamic State (ISIS) has confirmed what al-Qaeda and the Taliban already demonstrated a decade ago: strategic communications, especially counter-propaganda efforts, continue to be among the key weaknesses of Western counter-terrorism strategies. The ISIS propaganda machine has eclipsed its predecessors and peers in its reach, resonance, and relevance to local and transnational audiences. The pull of ISIS propaganda is tragically reflected in the growing number of foreign fighters that it is able to attract: U.S. security organizations estimate that about 30,000 citizens from approximately 90 countries have joined ISIS in Syria and Iraq since 2011.

US Senate Bill Seeks to Shine Light on Foreign Disinformation

US Senate Bill Seeks to Shine Light on Foreign Disinformation | Digital Strategy and Influence | Scoop.it
A man dressed like a U.S. soldier appeared in a video in September 2015, where he lined up the sights on a Russian-made Saiga 401K rifle and fired three shots into a copy of the Quran.

The video was widely circulated in Russia’s Muslim communities, where it sparked anger against the United States and its troops. It played on deeper anti-American sentiments, similar to when Florida pastor Terry Jones burned a Quran in 2011, leading to riots in Afghanistan, which killed 11 people.

But this latest video was a fake. Its source, according to a BBC investigation, was none other than Russia’s own disinformation office, the Agency for Internet Studies, also called the “troll farm.”

Social Media and Intelligence Goldmine

Social Media and Intelligence Goldmine | Digital Strategy and Influence | Scoop.it
The digital era has changed the way we communicate. These days, relationships and conversations between people, which are part of the human nature, take place through the web. Using social media, we can keep in touch with our friends and family, share posts with them, messages, pictures and videos; we can share our experiences with each other, be updated on our friends’ statuses, support them when they need it, and read their statements.

In the Wake of New Media: Connecting the Who with the How of Strategizing Communication

In the Wake of New Media: Connecting the Who with the How of Strategizing Communication | Digital Strategy and Influence | Scoop.it
In this article we argue that although there has been an intensified exploration of how organizations strategize within the field of strategic communication, there seems to be a key component missing, namely questioning who these organizations are and become in the process of strategizing. Strategic communication implicitly, perhaps even unintentionally, continues to rely on a classical understanding of organizations as “social units (or human groupings) deliberately constructed and reconstructed to seek specific goals” (Etzioni, 1964, p. 3). Assuming rather than exploring who the organization is, we argue, hinders a full explanation of how strategic communication works. Aiming to tackle this issue, we first present three ways in which the classical understanding of organizations is being theoretically challenged by organization studies and empirically challenged by new media, arguing that organizations are networked, sociomaterial, and contingent processes of meaning formation. Then we examine how the reconceptualization of the organization influences the concept of strategic communication, advocating that strategies should be seen as collaborative and networked flows (the how) of shared decision making by both human and nonhuman actors (the who). Finally, we discuss how this affects the notion of strategic action, and hence, strategic communication, asking what strategic action is and who performs it.
