Support East Timor and Indonesia Action Network

Human rights are still in crisis in the archipelago. Despite some modest gains in reforming the military and police over the past decade, human rights violations continue daily in West Papua and elsewhere. Past crimes committed in Timor-Leste, Indonesia and elsewhere in the archipelago continue to go unpunished, with those responsible enjoying important positions. Several are prominent candidates for Indonesia's highest office, including Prabowo, who has formed his own political party and is a leading contender for president. General Wiranto, indicted in Timor for his role as head of the military in 1999, is also planning a presidential run. We doubt they'll be very happy if you donate to ETAN.

Indonesia concerns revealed in Hawke cabinet papers

Indonesia concerns revealed in Hawke cabinet papers | Indonesiana | Scoop.it
An infamous Labor rivalry is reignited with the release of cabinet records from 1986 and 1987.

Indonesia relations a concern in the 1980s

The government's foreign priorities included China, Japan and Indonesia. Historian Jim Stokes has pored through the secret documents on Indonesia, and says negative attitudes and suspicion on both sides were fuelled by media reporting, human rights concerns and East Timor.

"Cabinet agreed that Australia should seek a sound relationship with Indonesia at all levels but avoid making such a disproportionate effort that Indonesia assumed the onus for a successful relationship rested mainly on Australia," he said.

Mr Hawke says cabinet recognised the importance of improving ties with Australia's neighbour.

"I always knew it was not going to be easy to establish a warm intimate relationship with Indonesia because there was such a difference between our political and cultural environments," he said. "It was obvious then that Indonesia was going to become one of the world's biggest economies and that we should have good relations with them."

Australia also imposed new sanctions on South Africa.

The 1998 Semanggi Tragedy — a deadly clash between university students and soldiers — is one of the experiences that shaped the life of Bona Sigalingging, currently the spokesman for the embattled GKI Yasmin church in Bogor.

[...] Bona is the first to admit that he was never a social media person. Nonetheless, he joined Facebook and Twitter in 2010 after he was appointed media officer by the church. Outside his working time, he regularly tweets about the case development of GKI Yasmin. He uses Twitter, @bonasays, and Facebook to spread his message about the case to the media, to other people and to the rest of the world.

Playing with publics Technology talk and sociability in Indonesia

Playing with publics Technology talk and sociability in Indonesia | Indonesiana | Scoop.it

By Joshua Barker

This paper describes an analog chat network in Bandung, Indonesia known as 'interkom.' Interkom is a network that links together the homes, food stalls and farms of a segment of Bandung's urban and peri-urban underclass. Interkom is interesting because it provides the occasion for users to reflect upon and manipulate the material and ideological conditions that shape experiences of self, talk and sociality in a densely mediated world. Interviews with users reveal that interkom constitutes a public that straddles the line between an indefinite community of strangers and a known audience. In playing with this public, users also play with an image of ideal sociality

Indonesia’s rising labour costs could discourage investment

Although external commodity price shocks and the declining value of the rupiah are the macro-economic trends dominating headlines about the Indonesian economy, some foreign investors still view lab...

A month earlier, protests had flared in Jakarta, after local administrators ignored calls for an increase in the minimum wage.

The demonstrations, which were led by the largest labour unions, have sparked concerns that labour costs risk are becoming uncompetitive.

Unions were demanding a 50 per cent increase in provincial minimum wages.

Following the protests, in early November, a dozen of Indonesia’s 33 governors raised the minimum wage in their localities by an average 19 per cent, including an 11 per cent increase in Jakarta.
