Singapore tells Indonesia to share forest fire maps

Singapore tells Indonesia to share forest fire maps | Environmental Management in Indonesia | Scoop.it

Singapore pressed Indonesia on Wednesday to share maps that could help make plantation companies accountable for setting fires that cause smog in neighbouring countries.

Secrecy over the maps, which reveal where agriculture firms operate on Indonesia's Sumatra island, has been a sensitive subject at a meeting of southeast-Asian environment ministers, nearly a month after Singapore suffered its worst recorded level of air pollution because of smoky haze blamed on Sumatran fires.

Indonesia's environment minister, Balthasar Kambuaya, agreed to recommend providing governments of neighbouring countries with land concession maps that show which companies might be responsible for fires that authorities detect.

"ALMA" is a journey into the soul of humanity - A powerful statement about deforestation and the global industrial economy

This is also one of the most strikingly filmed and crisply edited nonfiction film essays to come along in recent years, and Patrick Rouxel appears to be among the most talented ecologically-oriented filmmakers of today’s global cinema.

"ALMA" explores the devastating impacts of the cattle industry on the Amazon and a powerful statement about the global industrial economy.

Beautifully shot, alternately joyful and horrifying, Alma captures the ecological, and even spiritual, cost of meat, dairy, and leather production in the Amazon.

Since 2003, Patrick Rouxel has dedicated his time to making films aimed at raising awareness of deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and the ethical treatment of animals. The multi-award winning "GREEN" http://ow.ly/acGlh presented a heartrending account of the life of an Orangutan against a backdrop of palm oil production and natural habitat loss.

In Alma, Rouxel continues his cinematic journey into the world's forests and the industries that are destroying them, this time heading to Brazil to explore the devastating impacts of the cattle industry. Here he creates a powerful statement about the global industrial economy and the speed with which virgin forests are being cleared for timber and new grazing land... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=8uVOYQPobzo

LUXURY LEATHER, SUPPLY CHAINS AND AMAZON DEFORESTATION

Cattle ranches are threatening the Amazon thanks to our love of luxury leather goods. But, reports Lucy Siegle, Brazil's forests could have an unlikely ally: Gucci ...

... the more I see of the (fashion) industry, the more I am convinced the supply chain has become so confused that brands genuinely don't know where their raw materials are from.... Currently the luxury market is the key growth area in the fashion industry, so it's vital that this sector engages with ethical issues.

"This is the future of quality fashion and credible brands," says Livia Firth. "Taking responsibility for the supply chain from beginning to end. I think that's a beautiful thing."  http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/mar/03/luxury-leather-and-amazon-deforestation

Civil society organisations call on financial institutions to stop funding deforestation in Indonesia

November 6, 2012 - | Forest Peoples Programme

Financial institutions have been warned today to avoid investments in pulp and paper mills associated with deforestation and human rights abuses in Indonesia. Sixty environmental and social non-governmental organisations, including a dozen Indonesian civil society groups, have sent letters to banks and other financial institutions around the world asking for assurances that they will not invest in increased pulp milling capacity by Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) or other companies associated with the Sinar Mas Group until reforms have been achieved.... http://www.forestpeoples.org/topics/pulp-paper/news/2012/11/civil-society-organisations-call-financial-institutions-stop-funding-

"Oil Palm Cultivation Is Reforestration", Planters' Seminar Told

"Oil Palm Cultivation Is Reforestration", Planters' Seminar Told | Environmental Management in Indonesia | Scoop.it

Oil palm plantation is reforestration and not the deforestration of tropical rainforest in both Malaysia and Indonesia as perceived by Western environmental non-governmental organisations (WENGOs), says Sarawak Plantation Bhd chairman Datuk Amar Hamed Sepawi.
"These WENGOs are out to demonise the use of oil palm in the market.
"They create their own environmental criteria to influence their governments to restrict giving financial aid/financing to developing tropical countries keen to plant oil palm," he said in his paper at the 10th Institude of Society of Planters national seminar here.

Stop Burning Rain Forests for Palm Oil: Scientific American

Stop Burning Rain Forests for Palm Oil: Scientific American | Environmental Management in Indonesia | Scoop.it

December 7, 2012 - Scientific American

The world's growing appetite for cheap palm oil is destroying rain forests and amplifying climate change...

Palm oil exports bring Indonesia and neighboring Malaysia $40 billion a year.Yet this profit comes at a terrible toll. Converting forests into oil palm plantations destroys the home of not only orangutans but also such critically endangered creatures as the Sumatran tiger and the Sumatran rhino.

Moreover, the denuding of this land through logging and burning releases large quantities of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Much of this forest sits on peatland, the draining and burning of which releases even more carbon dioxide than the clearing of the overlying trees does....  http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=stop-burning-rain-forests-for-palm-oil

Palm oil is increasingly getting attention for being just as destructive to Indonesia's environment and international reputation as the country's coal industry. One more reason to hope Jero Wacik is serious about finally unlocking some of the country's clean energy potential during his time as Energy Minister.

Remote Sensing and Land Cover Change

Remote Sensing and Land Cover Change | Environmental Management in Indonesia | Scoop.it

By moving the slider, the user can compare 1990 false-color Landsat views (left) with recent true-color imagery (right). Humans are increasingly transforming Earth’s surface—through direct activities such as farming, mining, and building, and indirectly by altering its climate.

This interactive feature includes 12 places that have experienced significant change since 1990.  This is an user-friendly way to compare remote sensing images over time.  Pictured above is the Aral Sea, which is and under-the-radar environmental catastrophe in Central Asia that has its roots in the Soviet era's (mis)management policies.

Jake Red Dorman's curator insight, November 13, 2014 2:25 PM

Clearly the water level has decreased in Kazakhstan from 1990 until now. Farming, mining, and building are all indirectly changing the geography of some places. The use of rivers for cotton irrigation has shrunk by 3 quarters in the last 50 years and it is extremely affecting the Aral Sea.

Edelin Espino's curator insight, December 13, 2014 3:10 PM

Is sad to see how humans are changing the environment forcing the wild creatures to abandon the places they've been living for hundred or years or die of starvation. I wonder what will happen in 300 years when there is no more big lakes and the oceans will be completed polluted .

Tanya Townsend's curator insight, November 20, 2015 2:57 PM

Great tool to show students how human use of natural resources can change landscapes and have permanent impacts on geographical landmarks such as the aerial sea. How do we stop it? Can we undo the damage done? How do we prevent these tragedies from happening in the future?
