Universal Skills All Learners Should Know How to Do - User Generated Education | Individual and Special Needs Examiner | Scoop.it
This morning I was thinking about the things that all young people should know how to do regardless of income, geographical location, life goals, etc.  I started a list – see below.  Some have “always” been true – some are unique to this century of learning.  Let me know of any other universal skills you believe young people should know how to do.

The 11 Skills Underlying 21st Century New Literacies ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

The 11 Skills Underlying 21st Century New Literacies ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Individual and Special Needs Examiner | Scoop.it
The second major shift emerges with the uptake of the social networking sites and participatory technologies. Now, we no longer talk about a single literacy but multiple literacies. Literacies take many forms and encompass a varied body of social skills and cultural competencies. In their popular white paper "Confronting The Challenges of Participatory Cultures" Jenkins et al talked at length  about the development of these new literacies and how they come to shape the new learning forms that take place in the virtual space. According to Jenkins et al, these new literacies involve several social skills that are developed through collaboration and networking.

This overview article lists 11 literacy skills that resonate with me. As an online educator they all apply to my work. However the three that most closely describe the program I work in are:

6- Distributed cognition:
The ability to interact meaningfully with tools that expand mental capacities.

7- Collective intelligence:
The ability to pool knowledge and compare notes with others toward a common goal.

10- Networking
The ability to search for, synthesize, and disseminate information.

I learn by teaching. My life as an educator has prepared me to be 21st Century Literate.

15+ Ways of Teaching Every Student to Code (Even Without a Computer) - Edutopia

15+ Ways of Teaching Every Student to Code (Even Without a Computer) - Edutopia | Individual and Special Needs Examiner | Scoop.it

"According to Code.org, 90 percent of U.S. schools are not teaching any computer science. Eyebrows have been raised this year as the U.K. passed a plan to educate every child how to code.

In my opinion, parents of every student in every school at every level should demand that all students be taught how to code. They don't need this skill because they'll all go into it as a career -- that isn't realistic -- but because it impacts every career in the 21st century world. Any country recognizing that will benefit in the long term. Here's how you can start."

"Third grader Cordell Steiner makes a pretty convincing argument for using video games in the classroom in this TEDx talk. He describes feeling more motivated to learn and master new skills because of his eagerness to beat his own high score or finish before the clock runs out. He says he used to be bored in class when his teachers had to slow down to explain concepts, but now each student plays games intended to help him or her with specific skills they’re trying to master. He even gives examples!"

12 Essential Elements of a Social Media Marketing Strategy

12 Essential Elements of a Social Media Marketing Strategy | Individual and Special Needs Examiner | Scoop.it

If you want to attract and engage social-media fans and followers — and convert them into paying customers — you need to map out a clear, goal-oriented social media plan

Shaquille Portee's curator insight, October 20, 2014 2:09 PM

I found this article to be extremely informative when it comes to attracting paying customers through social media platforms. Most, if not all, companies use some sort of social media outlet to connect with their target consumer. But very few do it effectively. The first step mentioned in this article is basic; do your research. Know your targets interests and values so you know how to connect with them. Another step I found interesting is planning out what you are going to post. The average twitter, facebook, and instagram user usually doesn't plan what they plan to post. They usually do it on impulse. The same can't be done for an organization. You have to treat these sites almost like any other form of marketing and promotion. You wouldn't go out and shoot a commercial with out prior proper planning would you? The same goes for  these social media platforms. Assigning someone to be in charge of the social media marketing is very important. Having one to three people control what is posted promotes consistency.

Gina Tucker's curator insight, October 20, 2014 2:14 PM

Don't treat all social channels the same. Here are some guidelines for developing the most effective sales strategy.

I especially agree with the point that brands should treat all social networks differently. Don't post the exact same content to twitter, facebook, linkedin, etc. Put some variety in your publishing and cater it to your particular audience on that social network!

raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively; comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards;thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing their assumptions, implications and practical consequences as need be; andcommunicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems.

It’s all over the news: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education ranks among the country’s most pressing needs. Microsoft's next surprise is free Office for iPad, iPhone, and Android - The Verge

Microsoft's next surprise is free Office for iPad, iPhone, and Android - The Verge | Individual and Special Needs Examiner | Scoop.it

 - THE VergeMicrosoft's Office suite for iPad, iPhone, and Android is now free. In a surprise move, the software giant is shaking up its mobile Office strategy to keep consumers hooked to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. Starting today, you'll no longer need an Office 365 subscription to edit documents or store them in the cloud. The move comes just days after Microsoft announced a strategic partnership with Dropbox to integrate the cloud storage service into Office across desktop, mobile, and the web. You can now download Office for iPad and store all your documents on Dropbox without paying Microsoft anything at all. Microsoft is also releasing a brand new iPhone app today, alongside a preview of Office for Android tablets, all with Dropbox integration.

So it's understandable why Microsoft has gone this route.

Interesting article. Reflections…. Self worth and achievement seem to be linked together in most of Western Society. We personalise events in our life and then begin to live from our memories, gaining a false sense of identity instead of seeing it simply as a series of skills to learn.

Takeaways:

"people who think about their own learning, make a habit of asking questions, use what they’ve learned, teach what they’ve learned to others, and enjoy the learning process on an intrinsic level all become better learners"

"these are all strategies and habits that can be adopted through practice… The smartest, most successful people in the world wouldn’t be where they are today if they weren’t skilled learners. So let’s examine which strategies we should be perfecting and how they can serve us in the long run."
