This article concerns the Participatory Web and the impact it has on academic researchers’ perceptions of digital scholarship practices. The Participatory Web, as a space of active involvement, presence and socialisation of knowledge, has the potential to introduce significant changes to scholarly practice and to diversify it. This article draws on the findings of a narrative inquiry study that investigated the habitus of 10 digital scholars.

“Children go out in the world, they look, they see—and a camera is another way for them to capture that,” says Tovah P. Klein, director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development and author of How Toddlers Thrive. “You were putting him in the world to look around.” And the stamps and games? “Those took him out of it.” The digital add-ons are a distraction that pulls their focus (literally) away from picture-taking and into a world of silly hats and goofy effects. And developmentally, little kids are very bad at filtering out distractions. “The more simple the toy they’re given,” Klein says, “the more they discover for themselves.”

So often I walk into a classroom and announce, “Today we’ll be learning about ____________.” I fill in the blank with the teaching strategies for the day, and then I dive headlong into the lesson itself. When I start that way, students have no time to adjust themselves to the learning we’ll engage in that hour and have not had their background knowledge activated. One easy way to get students engaged in the lessons and primed for learning is to use what’s called an “Anticipatory set.” This essential teaching term is, according to teacher Jennifer Gonzalez, “A brief portion of a lesson given at the very beginning to get students’ attention, activate prior knowledge, and prepare them for the day’s learning. Also known as advance organizer, hook, or set induction.” It’s important that teachers take a few moments to carefully consider those opening moments of class to use teaching strategies that will help students become curious rather than bored, engaged rather than resistant. Here are a few teaching strategies for anticipatory sets that you might find worthwhile to try.

This is an excellent tool for creating online learning or getting students to presenttheir work. Just add the script for each slide and it autogenerates images and voice to go with the text. You can then tidy up and edit it or add your own voice.

Pick any field “X,” from archaeology to zoology. There either is now a “computational X”, or there soon will be. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, farmers, whatever—the future of all these professions will be full of computational thinking. Whether it’s sensor-based medicine, computational contracts, education analytics or agriculture—success is going to rely on being able to do computational thinking well.

Computational thinking is going to be a defining feature of the future, and it’s an incredibly important thing to be teaching to kids today. But where does it fit into the standard educational curriculum? The answer, I think, is simple: everywhere!

Arts Integration and the Success of Disadvantaged Students: A Research Evaluation | Individual and Special Needs Examiner | Scoop.it
Does arts integration contribute to student success for disadvantaged student populations? The introduction to this article compares students’ academic performance and arts education in countries outperforming the United States on the recent Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) and makes the argument for using arts integration as a way to teach the Common Core standards and align instruction to the Universal Design for Learning principles. This evaluation of research helps to support the evidence base by examining the quality of studies published between 1995 and 2011 investigating the use of arts integration with disadvantaged student populations, including economically disadvantaged students, English language learners, and students with disabilities. Four hundred fifty-three studies were explored, resulting in the inclusion of forty-four studies in this analysis. Studies were categorized as the following: single art integration, multi-arts integration, effects of arts integration on students with disabilities, or effects of arts integration on school climate. Studies were evaluated for their research design, implementation, and effects, and results depicted positive effects and potentially positive effects. Policy implications and suggestions for future research using the author's proposed theoretical framework are also discussed.
