Nintendo pills: Three teenagers rushed to hospital after consuming super ... - Mirror.co.uk | Indigo's Yr9 Journal | Scoop.it
The teens, one boy and two girls, needed emergency treatment after taking the potent form of the Class A drug at an under-18s disco
Indigo Colquhoun's insight:

This article is about a drug known as Nintendo (a drug named after and shaped like the logo of a popular gaming console so that it might appeal to young people) which is a super-strength ecstasy drug and the effects it had on a group of teenagers. I think that it's very concerning that a drug so powerful was so easily accessed by 14-year-olds at a party (it was sold to them by a 16 and a 17 year-old).

Report finds 7 in 10 teens ignorant about contraception

Report finds 7 in 10 teens ignorant about contraception | Indigo's Yr9 Journal | Scoop.it

There is a call for better sex education in Tasmanian schools after a report found most teenagers are ignorant about contraception.

The report by the Northern Early Years Group found 70 per cent of teenagers surveyed did not know how to avoid pregnancy.

Tasmania has the nation's third highest teen pregnancy rate behind Queensland and the Northern Territory.

The report was funded by the Uniting Church.

Uniting Care's chief executive Lindy O'Neill says the pill is the most widely used form of contraception among teenagers, but some do not know how to use it properly.

They did not realise it needed to be taken every day.

The report also found that an increasing number of young women rely on the morning after pill as their main form of contraception.

"The effective use of the contraception is not there, hence we get unplanned pregnancies," she said.

Ms O'Neill says many teenagers seek information about contraception from their peers or the internet, which can spread misinformation.

The survey found many teenagers felt embarrassed about attending sex education classes.

"A lot of the young people that we spoke to said that when sex education classes were on they felt uncomfortable, they didn't go or they missed some of them," Ms O'Neill said.

"So they only got part of the information, or they were mucking around, nervous, giggling, laughing and not actually taking on the information that was being offered to them."

Indigo Colquhoun's insight:

This article is about how a lot of (70 percent) Australian teenagers from Tasmania lack knowledge on sex education. I think this article is helpful because it lists some reasons as to why teens aren't interested in going or listening to sex ed classes, from the surveyed teens themselves.
