Native American travels across U.S. photographing citizens of tribal nations

Native American travels across U.S. photographing citizens of tribal nations | Indigenous Sovereignty | Scoop.it
She sleeps on couches, dines with strangers and lives out of her car. Still, Matika Wilbur does it for the art and for the people. Wilbur is Native American.
Jacqueline Keeler's insight:

"We are still here," she said. "We remain."

One of those stereotypes is the image of Indians clad in feathers, nearly naked running across the prairie, whooping it up like what's oft portrayed in western cinema. Also the caricature image of Indians as mascots.

With that in mind, Wilbur said the project is meant to drive conversations about the ubiquitous appropriation of Native American culture and to discuss how U.S. citizens can evolve beyond the co-opting of indigenous images and traditions.

"I hope to educate these audiences that it's not OK to dress up like an Indian on Halloween," she said. "I'm not a Halloween costume. I hope to encourage a new conversation of sharing and to help us move beyond the stereotypes."

Wilbur added that she hopes her photos -- her craft -- will display the "beauty of (Native) people and to introduce some of our leaders to a massive audience."

Awesome story! A very inspiring tale of a woman that is helping her people through dedication, and art through photography. There are also some pictures from SF, and she recieved her funding through Kickstarter.com. She captures some attention demanding images and pushes the envolope for her people.

What's behind Trump's 'Pocahontas' attack on Sen. Elizabeth Warren?

What's behind Trump's 'Pocahontas' attack on Sen. Elizabeth Warren? | Indigenous Sovereignty | Scoop.it
The tone of Trump's retorts to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who claims Native American heritage, has grown increasingly personal and racially charged.
Jacqueline Keeler's insight:
Mary Kathryn Nagle, a playwright, attorney and citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, believes that Trump is the last person who should be casting stones at Warren. “Trump’s inability to discern the difference between Sen. Warren and Pocahontas is no accident. Instead, his attack on her native identity reflects a dominant American culture that has made every effort to diminish native women to nothing other than a fantastical, oversexualized, Disney character,” she told MSNBC on Monday. “Today, native women are more likely to be murdered, raped, and abused than any other American population.”

“Until individuals like Trump are held accountable for their trivialization of native women’s identity and bodies, we will continue to be murdered and abused at rates that originated at the time of colonization,” Nagle added. “That is not, in my view, ‘making America great.’”
