How'd They Shoot That? Here Are the Cameras Used by the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival Filmmakers | Indie Filmmaking | Scoop.it
In anticipation for the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, we reached out to the directors who will be showing their films at the event this month. While we asked for some personal anecdotes from their shooting experiences, we also wanted to know what camera or cameras these directors used to make their films.
Jeremy Wilker's insight:

Lots of Alexa usage going on. And it isn't even a 4k camera.

CalMAN/DaVinci Resolve Display Calibration Interface and Display Technology Updates

CalMAN/DaVinci Resolve Display Calibration Interface and Display Technology Updates | Indie Filmmaking | Scoop.it

If you’re a colorist with an interest in color checking or calibrating all the displays in your studio — including your reference monitor, client displays, projectors, and periodically updating those  3D display correction LUTs — then you’re going to want to know that CalMAN 5.3 now provides a way to use DaVinci Resolve as a pattern generator. In fact, there is a dedicated version of CalMAN just for Resolve users.  When you use a WiFi connection with Calman 5.3 interfacing to Resolve, the patterns that Resolve generates come up on all the displays you have video connections to in your studio. Here’s a quick picture I took in my studio. It's not a beauty shot but you get the idea.   I get a kind of smug satisfaction knowing I can put up the same pattern on all displays and then check or calibrate each one directly from SpectraCal's CalMAN software anytime I want.

Film archive British Pathé has released its entire collection to YouTube

Film archive British Pathé has released its entire collection to YouTube | Indie Filmmaking | Scoop.it
Film archive British Pathé has released its entire collection to YouTube, making more than 85,000 rare 20th Century videos available to the public. History enthusiasts are now able to browse more than 3,500 hours of some of the most significant moments of the last century. Included in the vast release is unique footage of both World Wars, the Titantic, boxing legend Muhammed Ali and England’s glorious 1966 World Cup victory over Germany.

British Pathé says the films, which span from 1896 to 1976, cover every aspect of global culture and news. The archive’s general manager, Alastair White, told Sky News: “British Pathé is considered to be the finest news reel archive in the world. We decided to publish our entire archive to YouTube to ensure the maximum number of people can enjoy viewing British Pathé films.” The YouTube channel has been set up in collaboration with the German company Mediakraft Networks, an online television network.

Although the videos were previously available on the British Pathé website, it is the first time they have been made accessible for browsing and sharing. In a joint statement, British Pathé and Mediakraft said the project was set up to allow students, teachers and journalists to view, share and embed the high-resolution videos. It said the footage “paints vivid pictures of almost forgotten lifestyles, peculiar technical inventions and everyday life that British Pathé presented in newsreels, cinemagazines, and documentaries.” —British Pathé Publishes Archive On YouTube

Corel intros Pinnacle Studio for iPhone, reboots iPad app

Corel intros Pinnacle Studio for iPhone, reboots iPad app | Indie Filmmaking | Scoop.it

Corel has brought its previously iPad-only mobile video editing app, Pinnacle Studio, to the iPhone. The app allows for complex editing, including the ability to trim individual frames and insert elements like transitions, stills, titles, graphics, fast/slow-motion, and picture-in-picture effects. Quick clip arrangement can be done with the Storyboard, while the Timeline allows for more precise manipulation and trimming.

To bring it up to par with the iPhone, Corel has also launched major update of the iPad app. The interface has been overhauled to better suit iOS 7, and it supports 64-bit processing on devices with an A7 chip or better. Projects can be set to run at 24, 25, or 30fps, and a number of new controls have been added, such as a preview jog wheel, more gestures, and a "rotate media" button. When recording a voiceover, people can continue to listen to a project as long as they have headphones or a Bluetooth device.

Pelican cases get a trendy new look

Every TV shooter I know has a rack full of Pelican cases. Instantly recognisable, they are well known for their rugged construction and I use them to protect all my gear when I travel by air. They are however not exactly stylish – this is something Pelican are trying to change. Their soon to be launched new range looks much more like high end consumer luggage and is also incredibly lightweight.

Jeremy Wilker's insight:

these new cases look pretty good. maybe too flashy for travel, but nice design. I've never been a fan of the pick-and-pluck foam.

What’s All the Hubbub around the Fujifilm IS-Mini 3D LUT Box?

What’s All the Hubbub around the Fujifilm IS-Mini 3D LUT Box? | Indie Filmmaking | Scoop.it

If you haven’t heard, lots of folks are talking about a new SDI-based LUT box that sorta breaks the mold with regards to how LUT boxes have worked in the past.  Here’s why. The Fujifilm engineers designed a physically small SDI-based LUT box to hold a 3D LUT for display profiling and calibration, but this is not your ordinary single-purpose LUT box. Fujifilm wrote their own PC and Apple display calibration software that can be used to quickly calibrate and install LUTs for a variety of purposes. Think about using DaVinci Resolve to create a test look while on set and installing that LUT into the IS-mini for preview purposes. What about networking a number of LUT boxes together on a big multi-camera shoot to manage LUTs for onsite previewing, monitor matching, and look previewing at a live event?

Dedo show V-lock battery with in-built charger

These batteries may not be brand new but this NAB was the first time I’ve seen Dedo’s V-lock batteries that have in-built charging. The idea is so simple it is surprising there aren’t more batteries like this. The idea of not having to carry a charger is certainly very appealing to overburdened news cameraman. The only thing that isn’t clear is how fast or slow this system charges compared to branded chargers.
