Multicam editing allows us to edit multiple cameras at the same time. Initially released with Final Cut Pro 5, Apple has continued to add new capabilities to this feature. In the latest version of Final Cut, v.10.1, Apple added significant support for multi-channel audio.


In this short video tutorial, Larry Jordan shows how to sync multiple clips in preparation for multicam editing using the new "audio sync" feature or by manually creating sync markers for your clips.

I've had this camera since it came out, I use it every week. It is a rock-solid, super flexible, great performing camera for SO many types of work. It is Super 35mm, great in low-light, can adapt to any lens, the batteries last forever, it does 1080/60p, and has dual XLR inputs. If you have no need for 4k resolution, this is still a camera to contend with! You should also consider the Novoflex Nikon lens adapter!

Hot on the heels of their dramatic price reduction for the Pocket Cinema Camera, Blackmagic Design are back making news again today. This time they have introduced three new Apple ProRes flavours via firmware update 1.8.2 for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and Blackmagic Production Camera 4K. The formats are ProRes 422, ProRes 422 LT and ProRes 422 Proxy which allow for smaller file sizes while maintaining 10-bit 4:2:2 output.

Jeremy Wilker's insight:

This is a big deal because of increased storage/record times. ProRes 422 HQ is 220 MB/s, dropping down to just ProRes 422 gets you to 147 MB/s, and down to ProRes 422 LT is 102 MB/s (actual data rates vary based on frame rate and dimensions). You may not see any difference in your footage.

This course is an introduction to the great tradition of documentary photography. Students learn to see the world around them in a new way and produce a documentary project. The course requires reading and writing about photography, as well as doing it on a regular basis. The class emphasis is on thinking about why people photograph, what photographs do and do not mean to us, and on doing documentary work, on telling stories with photographs. This is not a technical class, and it should not be considered an "introduction to photography." I work on the assumption that any student signing up for the class has at least a minimal sense of the difference between f stops and T stops, and can find his or her way around a camera. While there will be some technical discussion in class, it will be limited.

It can be a long, anxious walk up to the front of the theater after screening your movie to a roomful of people you don't know. The anxiety doubles for me when conducting the Q&A myself. But I've come up with a little game plan and some rules to follow that make it flow a little easier. Perhaps in the comments you can share some ideas of your own. The first is to know that the audience is not ready to ask questions yet. Not at first. Do not open with "does anyone have any questions?". Nine times out of ten it will be met with silence. Instead, have at least two anecdotes to open with. I start with what inspired the movie. Where the creative spark came from. After that, I occasionally ask if anyone has any questions. But usually I go straight to a second anecdote about making the movie. Something funny. By this time, the audience has warmed up to the idea of talking about the movie and the questions start to come. It's funny (but very routine) how for the first couple of minutes nobody

Blackmagic firmware 1.8 tested – New user interface, AF improved on Pocket Cinema Camera and better debayering on BMCC

A couple of weeks ago Blackmagic Design’s Grant Petty took the wraps off the latest 1.8 firmware for his company’s cinema cameras. It was a unified release that aimed to bring together the look and feel of user interface for all the cameras in the range – in line with the upcoming URSA models. Petty was keen to point out that this firmware release is not the last and that more will follow with more feature improvements.

The Pocket Cinema camera received a boost to it’s autofocus performance with active Micro 4/3 lenses. This is something I was keen to test out as the previous firmware’s AF is all but unusable in most circumstances. Thankfully I had two BMPCCs on hand to compare the old and new directly.

Post-production Supervisor and director Herb Sevush has been with the show from the beginning, and confessed some trepidation moving away from FCP 7, but has found it to be a great fit for their data-intensive, increasingly 4K multicam production, and his work with remote editors. Here, Herb offers some insights into both the why and the how of their switch, with special attention to Premiere Pro CC's approach to multicam.

One of those roles that’s often misunderstood or under-appreciated is that of the unit publicist, a publicist who focuses on a film’s production. My fellow unit publicists and I have found that within the independent film community, we often get the question, “What is that and why does it matter?” “Unit publicity is generally the first line item to be removed from an independent film’s budget, but is one of the most critical components needed to deliver the movie when it is sold to a distributor,” says Erik Bright, president of Prodigy PR (Unit Publicist, All Is Lost, Kill Your Darlings, Margin Call, Little Miss Sunshine, Sideways) I talked to a handful of unit publicists who work on all types of sets—indies, studio films, union and non-union—to help explain what a UP does and why. Camera Confidential is not about the technical side of video journalism. You are on assignment and have just sent the first cut of your video back to your editor. Naturally she wants changes, but you are at one end of the world and she is at the other. She tries to explain what changes she wants, but you can’t quite visualise it. You edit another version but again it isn’t quite what they had in mind. After several more back and forths you might have a final cut, but you have wasted precious time and the whole process is super-tedious...

In a move that will likely shock other brushless gimbal manufacturers B+H have priced the new DJI Roninstabiliser at $2999 US (Update – DJI has just confirmed that this is an official price drop and the same price should be available from other US dealers). In the same 24 hours that saw Blackmagic Design slash the price of the Pocket Cinema Camera this is an equally surprising announcement. It was only a few weeks ago at Broadcast Asia that DJI were telling us that the retail price would be around $4499 US.

BACKSTORY DCP stands for Digital Cinema Package. It functions like a digital film print and is my first choice to exhibit my movies theatrically. At first, this format was out of reach for filmmakers on microbudgets. Even today, the places that will make them for you are, in my opinion, overcharging for it. About a year ago, I had a crime drama playing at festivals. Most were asking for a DCP or blu-ray to screen from. I made a blu-ray that looked perfect on my broadcast monitor, but at the festival, colors were washed out, blacks were elevated, and the projectionist could not figure out how to keep their player from folding my 5.1 mix down into stereo. If you haven't experienced this sort of thing, and I'm sure you have, it's a terrific thing to face -- after two years of post-production getting the whole damn movie to sing just right, some goofball who couldn't give a shit about doing their job right mis-projects your movie and is seemingly okay with not doing anything about it. My

Three ideas you should steal from the Sydney Film Festival 2014

Here's a little secret: film festival directors everywhere are killing themselves to make their events "more than just a movie." (After all, the experience of watching a movie can be reproduced at home, right? Wellll. . . let's argue about that later. The point is, film festivals know they need just a little bit more than the film itself to get people out of their homes and into the theater.)  Articles like this one make me think "damn, why didn't I come up of that?" right before I steal the idea outright. (With all due credit, of course.) That Viewmaster thing, that's brilliant.
